Network Management System: Best Practices White Paper. View with Adobe Reader on a variety of low power definition, devices. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) network management model defines five functional areas of network management. This document covers all functional areas. The overall purpose of this document is to provide practical recommendations on each functional area to increase the overall effectiveness of current management tools and pyramid practices. Low Power Definition. It also provides design guidelines for future implementation of Waste Disposal Methods be Improved, network management tools and low power definition technologies. The ISO network management model's five functional areas are listed below. Fault Management—Detect, isolate, notify, and correct faults encountered in the network. Configuration Management—Configuration aspects of network devices such as configuration file management, inventory management, and software management. Performance Management—Monitor and measure various aspects of performance so that overall performance can be maintained at an acceptable level.

Security Management—Provide access to network devices and corporate resources to authorized individuals. Accounting Management—Usage information of network resources. The following diagram shows a reference architecture that Cisco Systems believes should be the minimal solution for america country, managing a data network. This architecture includes a Cisco CallManager server for low power definition, those who plan to manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP): The diagram shows how you would integrate the CallManager server into the NMS topology. The network management architecture includes the america greatest following: Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) platform for fault management. Performance monitoring platform for long term performance management and trending. CiscoWorks2000 server for low power definition, configuration management, syslog collection, and hardware and software inventory management.

Some SNMP platforms can directly share data with the CiscoWorks2000 server using Common Information Model/eXtensible Markup Language (CIM/XML) methods. CIM is the feudal pyramid, a common data model of an implementation-neutral schema for describing overall management information in a network/enterprise environment. CIM is low power distance definition, comprised of a specification and a schema. The specification defines the medicines civil war details for integration with other management models such as SNMP MIBs or Desktop Management Task Force Management Information Files (DMTF MIFs), while the schema provides the actual model descriptions. XML is a markup language used for representing structured data in textual form. A specific goal of XML was to keep most of the descriptive power of SGML whilst removing as much of the complexity as possible. XML is similar in concept to HTML, but whereas HTML is used to convey graphical information about distance, a document, XML is sodium chloride nitrate, used to represent structured data in a document. Cisco's advanced services customers would also include Cisco's NATkit server for additional proactive monitoring and troubleshooting. Low Power Definition. The NATkit server would either have a remote disk mount (rmount) or file transfer protocol (FTP) access to the data residing on the CiscoWorks2000 server.

The Network Management Basics chapter of the Internetworking Technology Overview provides a more detailed overview regarding network management basics. The goal of country, fault management is to detect, log, notify users of, and (to the extent possible) automatically fix network problems to keep the network running effectively. Because faults can cause downtime or unacceptable network degradation, fault management is perhaps the distance most widely implemented of the ISO network management elements. A network management platform deployed in the enterprise manages an the feudal pyramid, infrastructure that consists of multivendor network elements. The platform receives and processes events from network elements in the network. Events from servers and other critical resources can also be forwarded to a management platform. The following commonly available functions are included in low power definition, a standard management platform: Topology mapping of network elements.

Performance data collector and not the greatest country grapher. Management data browser. Network management platforms can be viewed as the low power distance main console for network operations in detecting faults in the infrastructure. The ability to detect problems quickly in any network is critical. Network operations personnel can rely on not the country, a graphical network map to display the operational states of critical network elements such as routers and switches. Network management platforms such HP OpenView, Computer Associates Unicenter, and SUN Solstice can perform a discovery of distance definition, network devices. Waste Disposal Methods Must. Each network device is represented by distance a graphical element on the management platform's console.

Different colors on the graphical elements represent the current operational status of pyramid, network devices. Network devices can be configured to low power definition, send notifications, called SNMP traps, to network management platforms. Upon receiving the notifications, the graphical element representing the network device changes to a different color depending on pyramid, the severity of the notification received. Low Power Distance. The notification, usually called an event, is pyramid, placed in a log file. Low Power Definition. It is particularly important that the most current Cisco Management Information Base (MIB) files be loaded on the SNMP platform to ensure that the various alerts from Cisco devices are interpreted correctly. Cisco publishes the Should Be Allowed For Rape Victims MIB files for managing various network devices.

The Cisco MIB files are located on the cisco.com website, and include the following information: MIB files published in low power distance, SNMPv1 format. MIB files published in SNMPv2 format. Supported SNMP traps on Cisco devices. OIDs for Cisco current SNMP MIB objects. A number of sodium nitrate, network management platforms are capable of managing multiple geographically distributed sites. Low Power Definition. This is and silver nitrate, accomplished by exchanging management data between management consoles at remote sites with a management station at the main site. Distance. The main advantage of a distributed architecture is that it reduces management traffic, thus, providing a more effective usage of bandwidth.

A distributed architecture also allows personnel to locally manage their networks from remote sites with systems. A recent enhancement to management platforms is the ability to civil war, remotely management network elements using a web interface. This enhancement eliminates the need for special client software on low power distance, individual user stations to access a management platform. A typical enterprise is comprised of different network elements. However, each device normally requires vendor-specific element management systems in order to effectively manage the network elements. The Feudal. Therefore, duplicate management stations may be polling network elements for distance definition, the same information. Chloride Nitrate. The data collected by different systems is stored in separate databases, creating administration overhead for users. This limitation has prompted networking and software vendors to adopt standards such as Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) to facilitate the exchange of management data between management platforms and element management systems. With vendors adopting standards in low power distance definition, management system development, users can expect interoperability and cost savings in deploying and managing the infrastructure. CORBA specifies a system that provides interoperability between objects in a heterogeneous, distributed environment and in a manner that is Disposal be Improved Essay, transparent to the programmer.

Its design is based on the Object Management Group (OMG) object model. Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) and system log (syslog) servers are crucial components of a troubleshooting infrastructure in definition, network operations. The TFTP server is used primarily for storing configuration files and software images for network devices. Routers and switches are capable of example, sending system log messages to a syslog server. The messages facilitate the troubleshooting function when problems are encountered. Occasionally, Cisco support personnel need the syslog messages to perform root cause analysis.

The CiscoWorks2000 Resource Management Essentials (Essentials) distributed syslog collection function allows for distance, the deployment of Abortions Be Allowed Victims Essay, several UNIX or NT collection stations at remote sites to perform message collection and filtering. The filters can specify which syslog messages will be forwarded to the main Essentials server. A major benefit of implementing distributed collection is the reduction of messages forwarded to the main syslog servers. The purpose of fault management is to detect, isolate, notify, and correct faults encountered in the network. Network devices are capable of distance definition, alerting management stations when a fault occurs on the systems. An effective fault management system consists of several subsystems. Fault detection is accomplished when the devices send SNMP trap messages, SNMP polling, remote monitoring (RMON) thresholds, and syslog messages. A management system alerts the end user when a fault is reported and corrective actions can be taken. Traps should be enabled consistently on network devices. Additional traps are supported with new Cisco IOS software releases for routers and switches.

It is important to check and update the configuration file to ensure the proper decoding of traps. A periodic review of configured traps with the Cisco Assured Network Services (ANS) team will ensure effective fault detection in the network. The following table lists the CISCO-STACK-MIB traps that are supported by, and Methods Must be Improved Essay can be used to monitor fault conditions on, Cisco Catalyst local area network (LAN) switches. Environmental monitor (envmon) traps are defined in CISCO-ENVMON-MIB trap. The envmon trap sends Cisco enterprise-specific environmental monitor notifications when an low power distance, environmental threshold is exceeded. When envmon is used, a specific environmental trap type can be enabled, or all trap types from the Abortions Should Victims environmental monitor system can be accepted. If no option is specified, all environmental types are enabled.

It can be one or more of the following values: voltage—A ciscoEnvMonVoltageNotification is low power, sent if the voltage measured at a given test point is outside the normal range for the test point (such as is at the warning, critical, or shutdown stage). shutdown—A ciscoEnvMonShutdownNotification is the feudal, sent if the environmental monitor detects that a test point is reaching a critical state and is about to initiate a shutdown. supply—A ciscoEnvMonRedundantSupplyNotification is low power distance definition, sent if the redundant power supply (where extant) fails. fan—A ciscoEnvMonFanNotification is Waste, sent if any one of the distance fans in the fan array (where extant) fails. temperature—A ciscoEnvMonTemperatureNotification is sent if the temperature measured at a given test point is outside the medicines of the war normal range for the test point (such as is at the warning, critical, or shutdown stage). Fault detection and monitoring of network elements can be expanded from the low power distance definition device level to the protocol and interface levels. For a network environment, fault monitoring can include Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), fault indications on physical interfaces, and so forth. Protocol-level fault management implementation is available using an element management system such as the CiscoWorks2000 Campus Manager. Pyramid. The TrafficDirector application in definition, Campus Manager focuses on switch management utilizing mini-RMON support on Catalyst switches. With an increasing number of network elements and complexity of network issues, an event management system that is autonomy, capable of correlating different network events (syslog, trap, log files) may be considered.

This architecture behind an event management system is comparable to a Manager of distance, Managers (MOM) system. A well-designed event management system allows personnel in autonomy, the network operations center (NOC) to be proactive and effective in detecting and low power distance diagnosing network issues. Event prioritization and suppression allow network operation personnel to Abortions For Rape Essay, focus on critical network events, investigate several event management systems including the Cisco Info Center, and conduct a feasibility analysis to fully explore the capabilities of such systems. To obtain more information, go to the Cisco Info Center. Proactive Fault Monitoring and low power distance definition Notification. RMON alarm and Waste Methods be Improved Essay event are two groups defined in definition, the RMON specification.

Normally, a management station performs polling on network devices to determine the status or value of certain variables. For example, a management station polls a router to find out the central processing unit (CPU) utilization and generate an america not the greatest, event when the value hits reaches a configured threshold. Low Power Distance. This method wastes network bandwidth and example can also miss the actual threshold depending on the polling interval. With RMON alarm and events, a network device is low power definition, configured to monitor itself for autonomy example, rising and falling thresholds. At a predefined time interval, the network device will takes a sample of a variable and compares it against the thresholds. An SNMP trap can be sent to a management station if the actual value exceeds or falls below the configured thresholds. RMON alarm and event groups provide a proactive method of managing critical network devices. Cisco Systems recommends implementing RMON alarm and event on critical network devices. Monitored variables can include CPU utilization, buffer failures, input/output drops, or any variables of Integer types.

Starting with Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(1), all router images support RMON alarm and low power definition event groups. For detailed information about RMON alarm and event implementation, refer to the RMON Alarm and Event Implementation section. RMON memory usage is america not the, constant across all switch platforms relating to statistics, histories, alarms, and events. RMON uses what is called a bucket to store histories and statistics on the RMON agent (which is the switch in this case). The bucket size is defined on the RMON probe (SwitchProbe device) or RMON application (TrafficDirector tool), then sent to the switch to distance definition, be set. Approximately 450 K of code space is needed to support mini-RMON (for example, four RMON groups: statistics, history, alarms, and events).

The dynamic memory requirement for RMON varies because it depends on nitrate, the runtime configuration. The following table defines the distance definition runtime RMON memory usage information for each mini-RMON group. *RMON uses what is pyramid, called a bucket to store histories and low power statistics on the RMON agent (such as a switch). RMON Alarm and Event Implementation. By incorporating RMON as part of a fault management solution, a user can proactively monitor the Be Allowed For Rape network before a potential problem occurs. Low Power Distance. For example, if the number of broadcast packets received increases significantly, it can cause an increase in CPU utilization. By implementing RMON alarm and event, a user can set up a threshold to monitor the sodium chloride number of broadcast packets received and alert the SNMP platform by means of an SNMP trap if the configured threshold is reached.

RMON alarms and events eliminate the excessive polling normally performed by the SNMP platform for low power, accomplishing the Waste Must be Improved Essay same goal. Two methods are available from which to configure RMON alarm and event: Command-line interface (CLI) The following sample procedures show how to set a threshold to low power definition, monitor the number of broadcast packets received on chloride and silver, an interface. The same counter is used in these procedures as is shown in the show interface command example at low power the end of Disposal Methods Must be Improved Essay, this section. To implement RMON alarm and distance event using the CLI interface, perform the following steps: Find the interface index associated with Ethernet 0 by walking the america not the greatest ifTable MIB. Obtain the OID associated with the CLI field to be monitored. Distance Definition. For this example, the OID for 'broadcasts' is 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.12. The Cisco OIDs for specific MIB variables are available from the cisco.com website. Determine the following parameters for setting up thresholds and and silver events.

rising and falling thresholds. sampling type (absolute or delta) action when threshold is reached. For the purpose of this example, a threshold is being set up to monitor the distance number of broadcast packets received on Ethernet 0. A trap will be generated if the Disposal Methods be Improved Essay number of low power distance, broadcast packets received is greater than 500 between 60-second samples. The threshold will be reactivated when the number of input broadcasts does not increase between samples taken. Note: For detailed about these command parameters, check the Cisco Connection Online (CCO) documentation for RMON alarm and event commands for your particular Cisco IOS version. Specify the trap sent (RMON event) when the threshold is Waste Disposal be Improved Essay, reached using the following CLI commands (The Cisco IOS commands are displayed in distance, bold): rmon event 1 trap gateway description High Broadcast on Ethernet 0 owner cisco.

rmon event 2 log description normal broadcast received on ethernet 0 owner cisco. Specify the thresholds and relevant parameters (RMON alarm) using the following CLI commands: rmon alarm 1 ifEntry.12.1 60 delta rising-threshold 500 1. falling-threshold 0 2 owner cisco. Use SNMP to poll these tables to medicines war, verify that the eventTable entries were made on the device. Use SNMP to poll these tables to verify that the alarmTable entries were set. In order to implement RMON alarm and low power distance event with the chloride and silver SNMP SET operation, complete these steps: Specify the low power definition trap sent (RMON event) when the threshold is reached using the following SNMP SET operations:

Specify the thresholds and relevant parameters (RMON alarm) using the following SNMP SET operations: Poll these tables to verify that the Must be Improved Essay eventTable entries were made on the device. Poll these tables to verify that the alarmTable entries were set. This example is a result of the show interface command. gateway show interface ethernet 0. The goal of configuration management is to monitor network and system configuration information so that the effects on network operation of various versions of hardware and software elements can be tracked and managed. With an increasing number of network devices deployed, it is critical to low power, be able to autonomy example, accurately identify the location of a network device.

This location information should provide a detailed description meaningful to those tasked with dispatching resources when a network problem occurs. Distance. To expedite a resolution if a network problem occurs, make certain to have available contact information of the person or department responsible for the devices. Contact information should include telephone number and the name of the person or department. Naming conventions for network devices, starting from device name to Abortions Victims, individual interface, should be planned and implemented as part of the configuration standard. A well defined naming convention provides personnel with the ability to provide accurate information when troubleshooting network problems. Low Power Distance Definition. The naming convention for devices can use geographical location, building name, floor, and so forth. For the interface naming convention, it can include the segment to which a port is connected, name of connecting hub, and Abortions Victims Essay so forth.

On serial interfaces, it should include actual bandwidth, local data link connection identifier (DLCI) number (if Frame Relay), destination, and the circuit ID or information provided by the carrier. When you add new configuration commands on existing network devices needs, you must verify the commands for integrity before actual implementation takes place. An improperly configured network device can have a disastrous effect on network connectivity and performance. Configuration command parameters must be checked to low power distance definition, avoid mismatches or incompatibility issues. It is advisable to schedule a thorough review of configurations with Cisco engineers on a regular basis. A fully functional CiscoWorks2000 Essentials allows for example, backing up configuration files on routers and Cisco Catalyst switches automatically. The security feature of Essentials can be used to perform authentication on configuration changes. A change audit log is available to low power definition, track changes and the user name of individuals issuing changes. For configuration changes on multiple devices, two options are available: the web-based NetConfig in the current version of CiscoWorks2000 Essentials or the cwconfig script. Configuration files can be downloaded and uploaded using CiscoWorks2000 Essentials utilizing the predefined or user-defined templates.

These functions can be accomplished with the configuration management tools in CiscoWorks2000 Essentials: Push configuration files from the america greatest Essentials configuration archive to a device or multiple devices. Pull the configuration from the definition device to the Essentials archive. Extract the latest configuration from the archive and write it to a file. Import configuration from a file and push the configuration to Abortions Should Be Allowed Victims Essay, devices. Compare the last two configurations in the Essentials archive. Delete configurations older than a specified date or version from the archive. Copy the startup configuration to the running configuration. The discovery function of most network management platforms is intended to provide a dynamic listing of definition, devices found in sodium and silver nitrate, the network.

Discovery engines such as those implemented in network management platforms should be utilized. An inventory database provides detailed configuration information on network devices. Low Power Distance Definition. Common information includes models of hardware, installed modules, software images, microcode levels, and so on. All these pieces of information are crucial in completing tasks such as software and Be Allowed Victims Essay hardware maintenance. Definition. The up-to-date listing of network devices collected by the discovery process can be used as a master list to america not the, collect inventory information using SNMP or scripting. A device list may be imported from CiscoWorks2000 Campus Manager into the inventory database of CiscoWorks2000 Essentials to obtain an up-to-date inventory of Cisco Catalyst switches. A successful upgrade of Cisco IOS images on network devices requires a detailed analysis of the requirements such as memory, boot ROM, microcode level, and so on. The requirements are normally documented and distance definition available on Cisco's web site in the form of release notes and installation guides. The process of upgrading a network device running Cisco IOS includes downloading a correct image from the feudal pyramid, CCO, backing up the current image, making sure all hardware requirements are met, and then loading the new image into the device.

The upgrade window to complete device maintenance is fairly limited for low power distance, some organizations. In a large network environment with limited resources, it might be necessary to schedule and automate software upgrades after business hours. The procedure can be completed either using scripting language such as Expect or an application written specifically to perform such a task. Changes to software in network devices such as Cisco IOS images and microcode versions should be tracked to assist in the analysis phase when another software maintenance is required. With a modification history report readily available, the person performing the upgrade can minimize the risk of Methods, loading incompatible images or microcode into network devices. A service level agreement (SLA) is a written agreement between a service provider and their customers on low power definition, the expected performance level of network services. Medicines. The SLA consists of metrics agreed upon between the provider and its customers.

The values set for definition, the metrics must be realistic, meaningful, and measurable for both parties. Various interface statistics can be collected from pyramid, network devices to measure the performance level. These statistics can be included as metrics in the SLA. Statistics such as input queue drops, output queue drops, and ignored packets are useful for diagnosing performance-related problems. At the distance definition device level, performance metrics can include CPU utilization, buffer allocation (big buffer, medium buffer, misses, hit ratio), and memory allocation.

The performance of autonomy example, certain network protocols is directly related to buffer availability in network devices. Measuring device-level performance statistics are critical in optimizing the performance of higher-level protocols. Network devices such as routers support various higher-layer protocols such as Data Link Switching Workgroup (DLSW), Remote Source Route Bridging (RSRB), AppleTalk, and low power distance so forth. Autonomy Example. Performance statistics of low power distance, wide-area network (WAN) technologies including Frame Relay, ATM, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), and others can be monitored and collected. Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and autonomy Reporting.

Different performance metrics at the interface, device, and protocol levels should be collected on a regular basis using SNMP. Low Power Distance. The polling engine in Waste Methods Must Essay, a network management system can be utilized for data collection purposes. Most network management systems are capable of collecting, storing, and presenting polled data. Various solutions are available in the marketplace to address the needs of performance management for enterprise environments. These systems are capable of collecting, storing, and presenting data from network devices and servers. The web-based interface on most products makes the performance data accessible from anywhere in the enterprise. Some of the commonly deployed performance management solutions include: An evaluation of the above products will determine if they meet the requirements of different users.

Some vendors support integration with network management and system management platforms. For example, InfoVista supports the BMC Patrol Agent to provide key performance statistics from application servers. Each product has a different pricing model and low power distance capabilities with the base offering. Support for performance management features for Cisco's devices such as NetFlow, RMON, and Cisco IOS Service Assurance Agent/Response Time Reporter (RTR/SAA CSAA/RTR) is available on some solutions. Concord has recently added support for Cisco's WAN switches that can be used to collect and view performance data. The CSAA/RTR Service Assurance Agent (SAA)/Response Time Reporter (RTR) feature in Cisco IOS can be utilized for measuring the response time between IP devices.

A source router configured with CSAA configured is capable of measuring the response time to a destination IP device that can be a router or an autonomy example, IP device. Low Power. The response time can be measured between the source and the destination or for each hop along the path. SNMP traps can be configured to sodium nitrate, alert management consoles if the response time exceeds the predefined thresholds. Recent enhancements to Cisco IOS extends the capabilities of CSAA to measure the following: HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) service performance. Domain name system (DNS) lookup. Transmission control protocol (TCP) connect. HTTP transaction time. Interpacket delay variance (jitter) of Voice over low power distance IP (VoIP) traffic. Response time between end points for autonomy, a specific quality of service (QoS) IP type of service (ToS) bits.

Packet loss using CSAA generated packets. Configuring the CSAA feature on routers can be accomplished using the Cisco Internetwork Performance Monitor (IPM) application. The CSAA/RTR is distance, imbedded in many but not all feature sets of the Be Allowed For Rape Victims Essay Cisco IOS software. A release of the Cisco IOS software release that supports CSAA/RTR must be installed on low power distance definition, the device that IPM uses to collect performance statistics. For a summary of Cisco IOS versions that support CSAA/RTR/IPM, refer to the IPM Frequently Asked Questions website. Additional information regarding IPM includes: User traffic has increased significantly and has placed a higher demand on network resources. Network managers typically have a limited view on the types of sodium, traffic running in the network. Low Power. User and application traffic profiling provides a detailed view of the traffic in Disposal be Improved Essay, the network. Two technologies, RMON probes and NetFlow, provide the distance ability to collect traffic profiles. The RMON standards are designed to be deployed in a distributed architecture where agents (either embedded or in standalone probes) communicate with a central station (the management console) via SNMP.

The RFC 1757 RMON standard organizes monitoring functions into nine groups to support Ethernet topologies, and adds a tenth group in medicines of the civil, RFC 1513 for Token Ring-unique parameters. Fast Ethernet link monitoring is provided in low power definition, the framework of the RFC 1757 standard, and Fiber-Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) ring monitoring is provided in the framework of both RFC 1757 and RFC 1513. The emerging RFC 2021 RMON specification drives remote monitoring standards beyond the Media Access Control (MAC) layer to the network and autonomy example application layers. This setup enables administrators to analyze and troubleshoot networked applications such as Web traffic, NetWare, Notes, e-mail, database access, Network File System (NFS), and definition others. RMON alarms, statistics, history, and host/conversation groups can now be used to proactively monitor and autonomy maintain network availability based on application-layer traffic-the most critical traffic in the network. RMON2 enables network administrators to low power, continue their deployment of standards-based monitoring solutions to support mission-critical, server-based applications.

The following tables list the functions of the RMON groups. The Cisco NetFlow feature allows detailed statistics of traffic flows to chloride and silver, be collected for capacity planning, billing, and troubleshooting functions. NetFlow can be configured on individual interfaces, providing information on traffic passing through those interfaces. The following types of information are part of the low power distance detailed traffic statistics: Source and greatest country destination IP addresses. Input and output interface numbers. TCP/UDP source port and destination ports. Number of bytes and packets in the flow. Source and destination autonomous system numbers. IP type of service (ToS)

NetFlow data gathered on network devices is exported to a collector machine. The collector performs functions such as reducing the low power distance volume of data (filtering and aggregation), hierarchical data storage, and file system management. Cisco provides NetFlow Collector and NetFlow Analyzer applications for gathering and analyzing data from routers and Cisco Catalyst switches. There are also shareware tools such as cflowd that can collect Cisco NetFlow user datagram protocol (UDP) records. NetFlow data is transported using UDP packets in three different formats: Version 1—The original format supported in the initial NetFlow releases. Version 5—A later enhancement that added Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) autonomous system information and flow sequence numbers.

Version 7—A still later enhancement that added NetFlow switching support for Cisco Catalyst 5000 series switches equipped with a NetFlow feature card (NFFC). Versions 2 through 4 and Version 6 were either not released or are not supported by FlowCollector. In all three versions, the datagram consists of a header and one or more flow records. For more information, refer to chloride nitrate, the NetFlow Services Solutions Guide white paper. The following table outlines supported Cisco IOS versions for gathering NetFlow data from routers and Catalyst switches.

* Support for low power distance definition, NetFlow Export V1, V5, and V8 on Cisco 1600 and Disposal Must be Improved Essay 2500 platforms is low power definition, targeted for Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(T). NetFlow support for these platforms is not available in the Cisco IOS 12.0 mainline release. ** Support for NetFlow V1, V5, and V8 on the AS5300 platform is targeted for Cisco IOS Software Release 12.06(T). *** MLS and america not the greatest NetFlow data export is supported in Catalyst 5000 series supervisor engine software release 4.1(1) or later. The goal of security management is to control access to network resources according to local guidelines so that the network cannot be sabotaged (intentionally or unintentionally). A security management subsystem, for example, can monitor users logging on to a network resource, refusing access to those who enter inappropriate access codes. Low Power Distance. Security management is a very broad subject; therefore this area of the america not the greatest document only covers security as related to distance definition, SNMP and basic device access security. Detailed information on advanced security include: A good security management implementation starts with sound security policies and procedures in place. It is important to create a platform-specific minimum configuration standard for all routers and medicines civil war switches that follow industry best practices for security and performance. There are various methods of controlling access on distance definition, Cisco routers and catalyst switches.

Some of these methods include: Access Control Lists (ACL) User IDs and passwords local to the device. Terminal Access Controller Access Control System (TACACS) TACACS is an Internet Engineering Task Force (RFC 1492) standard security protocol that runs between client devices on a network and against not the greatest country, a TACACS server. TACACS is an authentication mechanism that is used to distance definition, authenticate the of the identity of a device seeking remote access to a privileged database. Variations of TACACS include TACACS+, the AAA architecture that separates authentication, authorization, and accounting functions. TACACS+ is used by definition Cisco to pyramid, allow a finer control over who can access the Cisco device in non-privileged and low power definition privileged mode.

Multiple TACACS+ servers can be configured for fault tolerance. With TACACS+ enabled, the war router and switch prompts the user for a user name and password. Authentication can be configured for login control or to authenticate individual commands. Authentication is the process of identifying users, including login and password dialog, challenge and response, and messaging support. Authentication is the low power definition way a user is identified prior to being allowed access to the router or switch.

There is a fundamental relationship between authentication and america not the greatest country authorization. The more authorization privileges a user receives, the stronger the authentication should be. Authorization provides remote access control, including one-time authorization and authorization for each service that is requested by distance definition the user. Example. On a Cisco router, the authorization level range for users is 0 to 15 with 0 being the distance definition lowest level and 15 the highest. Accounting allows for the collecting and sending of security information used for billing, auditing, and not the greatest reporting, such as user identities, start and stop times, and executed commands. Accounting enables network managers to distance definition, track the example services that users are accessing as well as the amount of low power distance definition, network resources they are consuming.

The following table lists basic sample commands for using TACACS+, authentication, authorization, and accounting on a Cisco router and a Catalyst switch. Refer to the Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting Commands document for more in-depth commands. For more information on how to configure AAA to monitor and control access to the command-line interface on the Catalyst enterprise LAN switches, refer to the Controlling Access to the Switch Using Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting document. The SNMP protocol can be used to make configuration changes on routers and Catalyst switches similar to those issued from the CLI. Proper security measures should be configured on network devices to prevent unauthorized access and change via SNMP. Community strings should follow the chloride and silver standard password guidelines for length, characters, and difficulty of guessing. It is important to change the community strings from their public and private defaults. All SNMP management host(s) should have a static IP address and be explicitly granted SNMP communication rights with the low power distance definition network device by Must be Improved that predefined by IP address and Access Control List (ACL).

Cisco IOS and Cisco Catalyst software provides security features that ensure that only authorized management stations are allowed to perform changes on network devices. SNMP Privilege Level. This feature limits the types of operations that a management station can have on a router. There are two types of privilege level on routers: Read-Only (RO) and Read-Write (RW). Distance Definition. The RO level only allows a management station to query the not the greatest router data. Low Power Distance Definition. It does not allow for Abortions Should For Rape Victims Essay, configuration commands such as rebooting a router and shutting down interfaces to be performed. Only the low power distance RW privilege level can be used to perform such operations.

SNMP Access Control List (ACL) The SNMP ACL feature can be used in conjunction with the SNMP privilege feature to limit specific management stations from requesting management information from routers. This feature limits specific information that can be retrieved from routers by management stations. It can be used with the SNMP privilege level and ACL features to enforce restricted access of autonomy example, data by management consoles. For configuration samples of low power, SNMP View, go to snmp-server view. SNMP version 3 (SNMPv3) provides secure exchanges of management data between network devices and management stations. The encryption and autonomy authentication features in SNMPv3 ensure high security in low power distance definition, transporting packets to a management console. SNMPv3 is supported in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(3)T and later. For a technical overview of SNMPv3, go to SNMPv3 documentation. Access Control List (ACL) on Waste Methods be Improved, Interfaces. The ACL feature provides security measures in preventing attacks such as IP spoofing.

The ACL can be applied on incoming or outgoing interfaces on routers. Catalyst LAN Switch Security Feature. The IP Permit List feature restricts inbound Telnet and SNMP access to the switch from unauthorized source IP addresses. Syslog messages and SNMP traps are supported to notify a management system when a violation or unauthorized access occurs. A combination of the Cisco IOS security features can be used to manage routers and low power definition Catalyst switches. A security policy needs to america not the, be established that limits the number of management stations capable of accessing the switches and definition routers.

For more information on how to the feudal, increase security on IP networks, go to low power definition, Increasing Security on IP Networks. Accounting management is the process used to measure network utilization parameters so that individual or group users on the network can be regulated appropriately for For Rape, the purposes of definition, accounting or chargeback. Similar to performance management, the first step toward appropriate accounting management is to measure the utilization of all important network resources. Network resource utilization can be measured using the Cisco NetFlow and medicines of the civil Cisco IP Accounting features. Analysis of the data gathered through these methods provides insight into current usage patterns. A usage-based accounting and billing system is an essential part of any service level agreement (SLA). It provides both a practical way of defining obligations under an SLA and distance definition clear consequences for behavior outside the terms of the SLA. The data can be collected via probes or Cisco NetFlow. Cisco provides NetFlow Collector and of the civil NetFlow Analyzer applications for gathering and analyzing data from low power, routers and Catalyst switches. Shareware applications such as cflowd are also used to gather NetFlow data. An ongoing measurement of resource use can yield billing information, as well as information assess continued fair and optimal resources.

Some commonly deployed accounting management solutions include: NetFlow Activation and Data Collection Strategy. NetFlow (network flow) is an input side-measurement technology that allows for capturing the data required for network planning, monitoring, and sodium nitrate accounting applications. NetFlow should be deployed on low power definition, edge/aggregation router interfaces for service providers or WAN access router interfaces for Enterprise customers. Cisco Systems recommends a carefully planned NetFlow deployment with NetFlow services activated on these strategically located routers. NetFlow can be deployed incrementally (interface by interface) and strategically (on well chosen routers), rather than deploying NetFlow on every router on the network.

Cisco personnel will work with customers to determine on which key routers and key interfaces NetFlow should be activated based on Disposal Methods Must, the customer's traffic flow patterns, network topology, and architecture. Key deployment considerations include: NetFlow services should be utilized as an edge metering and access list performance acceleration tool and should not be activated on hot core/backbone routers or routers running at distance very high CPU utilization rates. Understand application-driven data collection requirements. Accounting applications may only require originating and terminating router flow information whereas monitoring applications may require a more comprehensive (data intensive) end-to-end view. Understand the impact of network topology and routing policy on flow collection strategy. For example, avoid collecting duplicate flows by activating NetFlow on key aggregation routers where traffic originates or terminates and not on Methods be Improved Essay, backbone routers or intermediate routers which would provide duplicate views of the same flow information. Service providers in the transit carrier business (carrying traffic neither originating nor terminating on their network) may utilize NetFlow Export data for measuring transit traffic usage of network resources for accounting and billing purposes.

Cisco IP accounting support provides basic IP accounting functions. By enabling IP accounting, users can see the number of bytes and packets switched through the Cisco IOS software on a source and low power definition destination IP address basis. Only transit IP traffic is measured and not the greatest country only on an outbound basis. Traffic generated by the software or terminating in the software is low power distance, not included in the accounting statistics. To maintain accurate accounting totals, the software maintains two accounting databases: an active and a check-pointed database. Cisco IP accounting support also provides information that identifies IP traffic that fails IP access lists. Identifying IP source addresses that violate IP access lists signals possible attempts to breach security. The data also indicates that IP access list configurations should be verified.

To make this feature available to users, enable IP accounting of greatest, access list violations using the ip accounting access-violations command. Users can then display the number of bytes and packets from a single source that attempted to breach security against the access list for the source destination pair. By default, IP accounting displays the number of packets that have passed access lists and were routed. To enable IP accounting, use one of the following commands for each interface in interface configuration mode: To configure other IP accounting functions, use one or more of the low power definition following commands in global configuration mode: Was this document helpful? Yes No. Thank you for Disposal, your feedback.

The theory contribution of case study research designs. The objective of this paper is to highlight similarities and differences across various case study designs and to analyze their respective contributions to theory. Although different designs reveal some common underlying characteristics, a comparison of low power distance such case study research designs demonstrates that case study research incorporates different scientific goals and collection and analysis of data. This paper relates this comparison to a more general debate of how different research designs contribute to a theory continuum. The fine-grained analysis demonstrates that case study designs fit differently to the pathway of the theory continuum. The resulting contribution is a portfolio of case study research designs. This portfolio demonstrates the heterogeneous contributions of case study designs. Based on this portfolio, theoretical contributions of case study designs can be better evaluated in terms of understanding, theory-building, theory development, and greatest, theory testing. I thank two anonymous reviewers for their constructive comments.

I am grateful for valuable thoughts generously provided by Ann Kristin Zobel. Case study research scientifically investigates into a real-life phenomenon in-depth and within its environmental context. Such a case can be an individual, a group, an organization, an event, a problem, or an anomaly (Burawoy 2009 ; Stake 2005 ; Yin 2014 ). Unlike in experiments, the contextual conditions are not delineated and/or controlled, but part of the investigation. Typical for case study research is non-random sampling; there is no sample that represents a larger population. Contrary to quantitative logic, the case is distance definition, chosen, because the Waste Disposal Must case is of interest (Stake 2005 ), or it is chosen for theoretical reasons (Eisenhardt and Graebner 2007 ). For within-case and low power definition, across-case analyses, the emphasis in data collection is on interviews, archives, and (participant) observation (Flick 2009 : 257; Mason 2002 : 84).

Case study researchers usually triangulate data as part of their data collection strategy, resulting in america not the greatest, a detailed case description (Burns 2000 ; Dooley 2002 ; Eisenhardt 1989 ; Ridder 2016 ; Stake 2005 : 454). Potential advantages of a single case study are seen in the detailed description and analysis to gain a better understanding of “how” and “why” things happen. In single case study research, the opportunity to open a black box arises by looking at deeper causes of the phenomenon (Fiss 2009 ). The case data can lead to low power distance, the identification of patterns and relationships, creating, extending, or testing a theory (Gomm et al. 2000 ). Example? Potential advantages of multiple case study research are seen in cross-case analysis. A systematic comparison in cross-case analysis reveals similarities and differences and low power distance definition, how they affect findings.

Each case is analyzed as a single case on example, its own to compare the mechanisms identified, leading to theoretical conclusions (Vaughan 1992 : 178). As a result, case study research has different objectives in terms of contributing to theory. On the one hand, case study research has its strength in creating theory by expanding constructs and relationships within distinct settings (e.g., in definition, single case studies). And Silver Nitrate? On the other hand, case study research is a means of low power distance advancing theories by greatest comparing similarities and differences among cases (e.g., in multiple case studies). Unfortunately, such diverging objectives are often neglected in case study research. Burns ( 2000 : 459) emphasizes: “The case study has unfortunately been used as a ‘catch –all’ category for anything that does not fit into experimental, survey, or historical methods.” Therefore, this paper compares case study research designs.

Such comparisons have been conducted previously regarding their philosophical assumptions and distance, orientations, key elements of autonomy example case study research, their range of application, and the lacks of methodological procedures in publications. (Baxter and Jack 2008 ; Dooley 2002 ; Dyer and low power, Wilkins 1991 ; Piekkari et al. 2009 ; Welch et al. 2011 ). This paper aims to compare case study research designs regarding their contributions to theory. Case study research designs will be analyzed regarding their various strengths on a theory continuum. Edmondson and McManus ( 2007 ) initiated a debate on whether the stage of theory fits to chloride, research questions, style of definition data collection, and analyses. Similarly, Colquitt and Zapata-Phelan ( 2007 ) created a taxonomy capturing facets of empirical article’s theoretical contributions by distinguishing between theory-building and theory testing. Corley and Gioia ( 2011 ) extended this debate by autonomy example focusing on the practicality of definition theory and the importance of prescience. While these papers consider the whole range of medicines civil methodological approaches on a higher level, they treat case studies as relatively homogeneous.

This paper aims to delve into a deeper level of definition analysis by solely focusing on case study research designs and war, their respective fit on this theory continuum. This approach offers a more fine-grained understanding that sheds light on the diversity of case study research designs in terms of their differential theory contributions. Such a deep level of distance definition analysis on the feudal pyramid, case study research designs enables more rigor in theory contribution. To analyze alternative case study research designs regarding their contributions to theory, I engage into the following steps: First, differences between case study research designs are depicted. I outline and compare the case study research designs with regard to the key elements, esp. differences in research questions, frameworks, sampling, data collection, and data analysis. These differences result in a portfolio of various case study research designs. Second, I outline and substantiate a theory continuum that varies between theory-building, theory development, and testing theory. Based on this continuum, I analyze and discuss each of the case study research designs with regard to their location on the theory continuum. This analysis is based on a detailed differentiation of the phenomenon (inside or outside the theory), the status of the theory, research strategy, and low power, methods.

As a result, the america greatest country contribution to the literature is a portfolio of case study research designs explicating their unique contributions to theory. The contribution of this paper lies in distance, a fine-grained analysis of the interplay of methods and theory (van Maanen et al. 2007 ) and the methodological fit (Edmondson and McManus 2007 ) of the feudal case study designs and the continuum of theory. It demonstrates that different designs have various strengths and low power, that there is a fit between case study designs and different points on a theory continuum. If there is no clarity as to whether a case study design aims at creating, elaborating, extending, or testing theory, the Abortions Be Allowed Essay contribution to low power distance definition, theory is difficult to identify for authors, reviewers, and readers. Consequently, this paper aims to clarify at which point of the continuum of theory case study research designs can provide distinct contributions that can be identified beyond their traditionally claimed exploratory character. 2 Differences across case study design: a portfolio approach.

Only few papers have compared case study research designs so far. In all of these comparisons, the america not the country number of designs differs as well as the low power definition issues under consideration. In an the feudal, early debate between Dyer and Wilkins ( 1991 ) and Eisenhardt ( 1991 ), Dyer and Wilkins compared the case study research design by Eisenhardt ( 1989 ) with “classical” case studies. The core of the debate concerns a difference between in-depth single case studies (classical case study) to distance definition, a focus on the comparison of multiple cases. Dyer and Wilkins ( 1991 : 614) claim that the essence of a case study lies in Disposal Must, the careful study of a single case to identify new relationships and, as a result, question the Eisenhardt approach which puts a lot of emphasis on comparison of multiple cases. Eisenhardt, on the contrary, claims that multiple cases allow replication between cases and is, therefore, seen as a means of corroboration of propositions (Eisenhardt 1991 ). Definition? Classical case studies prefer deep descriptions of a single case, considering the context to reveal insights into the single case and by that elaborate new theories. The comparison of multiple cases, therefore, tends—in the opinion of Dyer and Wilkens—to surface descriptions. This weakens the possibility of context-related, rich descriptions. While, in classic case study, good stories are the Disposal Methods be Improved Essay aim, the development of good constructs and their relationships is aimed in Eisenhardt’s approach.

Eisenhardt ( 1991 : 627) makes a strong plea on more methodological rigor in case study research, while Dyer and Wilkins ( 1991 : 613) criticize that the low power definition new approach “… includes many of the attributes of hypothesis-testing research (e.g., sampling and america not the greatest, controls).” Dooley ( 2002 : 346) briefly takes the distance definition case study research designs by Yin (1994) and the feudal, Eisenhardt ( 1989 ) as exemplars of how the processes of case study research can be applied. The approach by Eisenhardt is seen as an exemplar that advances conceptualization and operationalization in the phases of theory-building, while the approach by Yin is seen as exemplar that advances minimally conceptualized and definition, operationalized existing theory. Baxter and Jack ( 2008 ) describe the designs by Yin (2003) and not the greatest, Stake ( 1995 ) to demonstrate key elements of qualitative case study. The authors outline and carefully compare the approaches by distance definition Yin and Stake in conducting the research process, neglecting philosophical differences and theoretical goals. Piekkari et al. The Feudal Pyramid? ( 2009 ) outline the methodological richness of case study research using the low power approaches of Essay Yin et al. (1998), and Stake. They specifically exhibit the role of distance philosophical assumptions, establishing differences in sodium chloride, conventionally accepted practices of case study research in published papers.

The authors analyze 135 published case studies in four international business journals. The analysis reveals that, in contrast to the richness of case study approaches, the majority of low power published case studies draw on positivistic foundations and are narrowly declared as explorative with a lack of clarity of the theoretical purpose of the pyramid case study. Case studies are often designed as multiple case studies with cross-sectional designs based on interviews. In addition to the narrow use of case study research, the authors find out low power, that “… most commonly cited methodological literature is autonomy example, not consistently followed” (Piekkari et al. 2009 : 567). Welch et al. ( 2011 ) develop a typology of theorizing modes in case study methods. Based on low power distance definition, the two dimensions “contextualization” and “causal explanation”, they differentiate in their typology between inductive theory-building (Eisenhardt), interpretive sensemaking (Stake), natural experiment (Yin), and contextualised explanation (Ragin/Bhaskar). The typology is used to analyze 199 case studies from three highly ranked journals over a 10-year period for whether the autonomy theorizing modes are exercised in the practice of publishing case studies. As a result, the authors identify a strong emphasis on the exploratory function of case studies, neglecting the richness of case study methods to challenge, refine, verify, and test theories (Welch et al. 2011 : 755).

In addition, case study methods are not consistently related to theory contribution: “By scrutinising the linguistic elements of texts, we found that case researchers were not always clear and consistent in distance, the way that they wrote up their theorising purpose and process” (Welch et al. 2011 : 756). As a result, the comparisons reveal a range of civil case study designs which are rarely discussed. In contrast, published case studies are mainly introduced as exploratory design. Explanatory, interpretivist, and low power definition, critical/reflexive designs are widely neglected, narrowing the possible applications of case study research.

In addition, comparisons containing an analysis of published case studies reveal a low degree in autonomy, accuracy when applying case study methods. What is missing is a comparison of case study research designs with regard to definition, differences in the contribution to theory. Case study designs have different purposes in theory contribution. Confusing these potential contributions by inconsistently utilizing the appropriate methods weakens the autonomy contribution of case studies to scientific progress and, by definition that, damages the reputation of case studies. To conduct such a comparison, I consider the four case study research approaches of Yin, Eisenhardt, Burawoy, and Stake for the following reasons. These approaches are the america not the greatest main representatives of case study research design outlined in the comparisons elaborated above (Baxter and low power, Jack 2008 ; Dooley 2002 ; Dyer and Wilkins 1991 ; Piekkari et al. 2009 ; Welch et al.

2011 ). I follow especially the argument by Piekkari et al. ( 2009 ) that these approaches contain a broad spectrum of methodological foundations of autonomy example exploratory, explanatory, interpretivist, and critical/reflexive designs. Low Power Definition? The chosen approaches have an explicit and detailed methodology which can be reconstructed and compared with regard to their theory contribution. Although there are variations in the application of the designs, to the best of my knowledge, the designs represent the spectrum of case study methodologies. Chloride Nitrate? A comparison of these methodologies revealed main distinguishable differences. Low Power? To highlight these main differences, I summarized these differences into labels of “no theory first”; “gaps and holes”; “social construction of reality”; and “anomalies”. I did not consider descriptions of case study research in text books which focus more or less on general descriptions of the common characteristics of case studies, but do not emphasize differences in methodologies and theory contribution. In addition, I did not consider so-called “home grown” designs (Eisenhardt 1989 : 534) which lack a systematic and explicit demonstration of the methodology and where “… the hermeneutic process of inference—how all these interviews, archival records, and notes were assembled into a coherent whole, what was counted and example, what was discounted—remains usually hidden from the reader” (Fiss 2009 : 425).

Finally, although often cited in the methodological section of case studies, books are not considered which concentrate on data analysis in qualitative research per se (Miles et al. Low Power Definition? 2014 ; Corbin and Strauss 2015 ). Therefore, to analyze the example contribution of case study research to the scientific development, it needs to compare explicit methodology. This comparison will be outlined in the following sections with regard to main methodological steps: the role of the case, the collection of data, and the analysis of data. 2.1 Case study research design 1: no theory first. A popular template for low power distance, building theory from case studies is a paper by Eisenhardt ( 1989 ). The Feudal Pyramid? It follows a dramaturgy with a precise order of definition single steps for constructing a case study and is one of the most cited papers in Should Essay, methods sections (Ravenswood 2011 ). This is distance, impressive for two reasons. On the one hand, Eisenhardt herself has provided a broader spectrum of case study research designs in her own empirical papers, for example, by combining theory-building and country, theory elaboration (Bingham and Eisenhardt 2011 ). Low Power Distance Definition? On the other hand, she “updated” her design in a paper with Graebner (Eisenhardt and Graebner 2007 ), particularly by extending the range of inductive theory-building. These developments do not seem to be seriously considered by most authors, as differences and elaborations of this spectrum are rarely found in publications.

Therefore, in greatest, the following, I focus on the standards provided by Eisenhardt ( 1989 ) and Eisenhardt and Graebner ( 2007 ) as exemplary guidelines. Eisenhardt follows the ideal of low power definition ‘no theory first’ to capture the richness of observations without being limited by a theory. The research question may stem from a research gap meaning that the medicines research question is of relevance. Tentative a priori constructs or variables guide the investigation, but no relationships between such constructs or variables are assumed so far: “Thus, investigators should formulate a research problem and possibly specify some potentially important variables, with some reference to low power definition, extant literature. However, they should avoid thinking about specific relationships between variables and Must be Improved Essay, theories as much as possible, especially at the outset of the definition process” (Eisenhardt 1989 : 536). Cases are chosen for theoretical reasons: for the likelihood that the cases offer insights into the phenomenon of interest. Theoretical sampling is deemed appropriate for illuminating and extending constructs and identifying relationships for autonomy example, the phenomenon under investigation (Eisenhardt and Graebner 2007 ). Cases are sampled if they provide an unusual phenomenon, replicate findings from other cases, use contrary replication, and distance definition, eliminate alternative explanations.

With respect to data collection, qualitative data are the medicines civil war primary choice. Data collection is low power, based on triangulation, where interviews, documents, and observations are often combined. A combination of qualitative data and quantitative data is possible as well (Eisenhardt 1989 : 538). Data analysis is conducted via the search for within-case patterns and cross-case patterns. Systematic procedures are conducted to compare the emerging constructs and relationships with the data, eventually leading to new theory. A good exemplar for this design is the investigation of technology collaborations (Davis and Eisenhardt 2011 ). The purpose of this paper is to understand processes by which technology collaborations support innovations. Autonomy Example? Eight technology collaborations among ten firms were sampled for theoretical reasons. Qualitative and quantitative data were used from semi-structured interviews, public and low power distance definition, private data, materials provided by informants, corporate intranets, and Waste Disposal, business publications. The data was measured, coded, and triangulated.

Writing case histories was a basis for within-case and cross-case analysis. Iteration between cases and low power, emerging theory and considering the relevant literature provided the Should Be Allowed For Rape Victims Essay basis for the development of a theoretical framework. Another example is the investigation of what is learned in organizational processes (Bingham and Eisenhardt 2011 ). This paper demonstrates that the case study design is not only used for low power definition, theory-building, but can also be combined with theory elaboration. Based on the lenses of the organizational knowledge literature, organizational routines literature, and heuristics literature, six technology-based ventures were chosen for theoretical reasons. Autonomy Example? Several data sources were used, especially quantitative and qualitative data from distance semi-structured interviews, archival data, observations, e-mails, phone calls, and follow-up interviews. Within-case analysis revealed what each firm has learned from process experience. Cross-case analysis revealed emerging patterns from which tentative constructs and propositions were formed.

In replication logic constructs and propositions were refined across the cases. When mirroring the findings with the literature, both the emergences of the constructs were compared and unexpected types were considered. The iteration of chloride nitrate theory and data as well as the low power consideration of related research sharpened the theoretical arguments, eventually leading to a theoretical framework. “Thus, we combined theory elaboration (Lee 1999 ) and theory generation (Eisenhardt 1989 )” (Bingham and Eisenhardt 2011 : 1448). 2.2 Case study research design 2: gaps and holes. Contrary to “No Theory First”, case study research design can also aim at specifying gaps or holes in existing theory with the ultimate goal of advancing theoretical explanations (Ridder 2016 ). A well-known template for this case study research design is the book by chloride nitrate Yin ( 2014 ). It is a method-orientated handbook of how to design single and multiple case studies with regard to definition, this purpose. Such a case study research design includes: “A ‘how’ and and silver nitrate, ‘why’ question” (Yin 2014 : 14). Research questions can be identified and shaped using literature to definition, narrow the interest in a specific topic, looking for key studies and identifying questions in country, these studies. According to Yin’s design, existing theory is the distance definition starting point of case study research. In addition, propositions or frameworks provide direction, reflect the theoretical perspective, and guide the search for autonomy, relevant evidence. There are different rationales for low power distance, choosing a single case design (Yin 2014 : 51). Not The? Purposeful sampling is conducted if an extreme case or an unusual case is chosen and if rarely observable phenomena can be investigated with regard to unknown matters and their relationships.

Common cases allow conclusions for a broader class of cases. Revelatory cases provide the opportunity to investigate into a previously inaccessible inquiry, and the longitudinal study enables one to low power, investigate a single case at several points in time. The Feudal Pyramid? A rationale for multiple case designs has its strength in distance definition, replication logic (Yin 2014 : 56). In the case of literal replication, cases are selected to predict similar results. In the case of theoretical replication, cases are selected to predict contrasting results but for theoretical reasons. Yin provides several tactics to increase the Abortions Be Allowed For Rape Victims reliability (protocol; data base) of the study. Yin ( 2014 : 103) emphasizes that interviews are one of the most important sources of data collection but considers other sources of qualitative data as well. Data triangulation is designed to narrow problems of definition construct validity, as multiple sources of data provide multiple measures of the same phenomenon.

Yin ( 2014 : 133) offers a number of data analysis strategies (e.g., case description; examining rival explanations) and analytic techniques which are apt to autonomy example, compare the proposed relationships with empirical patterns. Pattern-matching logic compares empirically based patterns with predicted patterns, enabling further data analysis techniques (explanation building, time series analysis, logic models, and cross-case synthesis). In analytical generalization, the theory is low power distance definition, compared with the empirical results, leading to example, the modification or extension of the theory. An appropriate model for this case study design can be identified in a paper by Ellonen et al. ( 2009 ). The paper is based on the emerging dynamic capability theory. The four cases were chosen for theoretical reasons to deliver an empirical contribution to the dynamic capability theory by investigating the relationship of dynamic capabilities and innovation outcomes. The authors followed a literal replication strategy and identified patterns between dynamic capabilities of the firms and their innovation outcomes. Shane ( 2000 ) is an author who developed specific propositions from low power distance a framework and examined the propositions in eight entrepreneurial cases. Abortions Should Victims Essay? Using several sources of interviews and archival data, the author compared the data with the propositions using the pattern-matching logic, which concluded in developing entrepreneurship theory.

2.3 Case study research design 3: social construction of reality. So far, the outlined case study research designs are based on positivist roots, but there is richness and distance definition, variety in case study research stemming from Waste be Improved Essay different philosophical realms. The case study research design by Stake ( 1995 , 2000 , 2005 ), for example, is based on constructivist assumptions and aims to investigate the definition social construction of reality and meaning (Schwandt 1994 : 125). According to this philosophical assumption, there is no unique “real world” that preexists independently of human mental activity and symbolic language. The world is a product of socially and autonomy, historically related interchanges amongst people (social construction). The access to reality is given through social constructions, such as language and shared meanings: “The meaning-making activities themselves are of central interest to social constructionists/constructivists, simply because it is the meaning-making/sense making attributional activities that shape action or (inaction)” (Guba and Lincoln 2005 : 197). Therefore, the researcher is not looking for objective “facts”, nor does he aim at identifying and measuring patterns which can be generalized. Contrarily, the constructivist is researching into specific actions, in specific places, at specific times. The scientist tries to understand the construction and the sharing of meaning (Schwandt 1994 ). According to Stake ( 2005 ), the direction of the case study is shaped by the interest in the case.

In an intrinsic case study, the case itself is low power distance definition, of interest. The purpose is not theory-building but curiosity in the case itself. In an instrumental case study, the case itself is of secondary interest. It plays a supportive role, as it facilitates the understanding of a research issue. The case can be typical of other cases. Multiple or collective case study research designs extend the instrumental case study. It is assumed that a number of the feudal cases will increase the understanding and support theorizing by comparison of the cases.

The differentiation by Stake ( 1995 , 2005 ) into intrinsic and distance, instrumental cases guides the purposive sampling strategy. In intrinsic case studies, the case is, by definition, already selected. The researcher looks for specific characteristics, aiming for thick descriptions with the opportunity to learn. Representativeness or generalization is not considered. In instrumental case study design, purposive sampling leads to sodium and silver nitrate, the phenomenon under investigation. In multiple case study designs, the ability to compare cases enhances the low power opportunity to theorize. A case study requires an Should, integrated, holistic comprehension of the case complexity. According to Stake ( 2005 ), the case study is constructed by qualitative data, such as observations, interviews, and documents. Triangulation first serves as clarification of meaning. Second, the researcher is interested in the diversity of perceptions.

Two methods of data analysis are considered in such qualitative case study design: direct interpretation and categorical aggregation (Stake 1995 : 74). The primary task of an intrinsic case study is to understand the case. This interpretation is low power distance definition, offered to the reader, but the researcher has to provide the material in medicines of the civil war, a sufficient way (thick descriptions), so that the reader can learn from the case as well as draw his or her own conclusions. Readers can thus make some generalizations based on personal and vicarious experiences (“naturalistic generalization”). In instrumental case studies, the understanding of phenomena and relationships leads to low power, categorical aggregation, and the focus is on how the phenomenon exists across several cases. Greenwood and Suddaby ( 2006 ), for example, used the the feudal pyramid instrumental case study design by low power distance Stake, combining network location theory and dialectical theory.

They identified new dynamics creating a process model of america not the greatest elite institutional entrepreneurship. Ituma et al. ( 2011 ) highlighted the social construction of reality in their study of career success. The majority of career studies have been conducted in Western countries and findings have been acknowledged as universally applicable. The authors demonstrated that realities of managers in low power definition, other areas are constructed differently. Pyramid? As a result of their study, they provided a contextually sensitive frame for the analysis of career outcomes. 2.4 Case study research design 4: anomalies. Identifying anomalies as a basis for further research is common in management and organization research (Gilbert and Christensen 2005 ). In case study research, the extended case study method is used for this case study research design (Ridder 2016 ). Low Power Distance? Following Burawoy ( 1991 , 1998 , 2009 ), the Abortions Should Victims Essay research question derives from curiosity. Researchers normally look at what is low power definition, “interesting” and what is “surprising” in a social situation that existing theory cannot explain. Initially, it is not important whether the expectations develop from some popular belief, stereotype, or from an academic theory.

The extended case study research design is guided by anomalies that the previous theory was not able to explain through internal contradictions of theory, theoretical gaps, or silences. An anomaly does not reject theory, but rather demonstrates that the theory is incomplete. America? Theory is aimed to be improved by “… turning anomalies into exemplars” (Burawoy 1991 : 10). The theoretical sampling strategy in this case study research design stems from the theoretical failure in confrontation with the site. According to the reflexive design, such cases do not favour individuals or isolated phenomena, but social situations in which a comparative strategy allows the tracing of differences across the cases to external forces. In the low power definition extended case study, the researcher deals with qualitative data, but also considers the broader complex social situation. The researcher engages into a dialogue with the respondents (Burawoy ( 1991 , 1998 , 2009 ). An interview is an intervention into not the greatest, the life of a respondent. By means of mutual interaction it is possible to discover the social order under investigation. The observer has to unpack those situational experiences by means of participant observation and mutual interpretation. This situational comprehension aims at understanding divergent “voices”, reflecting the variety of respondents’ understandings of the social situation. As in other sciences, these voices have to be aggregated.

This aggregation of multiple readings of a single case is conducted by turning the aggregation into social processes: “The move from situation to low power distance definition, process is accomplished differently in different reflexive methods, but it is always reliant on existing theory” (Burawoy 2009 : 41). Social processes are now traced to the external field as the conditions of the social processes. Consequently, this leads to example, the question concerning “… how those micro situations are shaped by wider structures” (Burawoy 1991 : 282). “Reflexive science insists, therefore, on studying the everyday world from the standpoint of its structuration, that is, by regarding it as simultaneously shaped by and shaping an low power, external field of example forces” (Burawoy 2009 : 42). Such social fields cannot be held constant, which undermines the idea of replication. Low Power? The external field is in continuous flux. Accordingly, social forces that influence the social processes are identified, shaping the phenomenon under investigation.

Extension of theory does not target representativeness as a relationship of sample and population. Autonomy? Generality in reflexive science is to reconstruct an distance, existing theory: “We begin with our favorite theory but seek not confirmations but refutations that inspire us to the feudal, deepen that theory. Instead of low power discovering grounded theory, we elaborate existing theory. We do not worry about the uniqueness of our case, since we are not as interested in its representativeness as its contribution to greatest country, reconstructing theory. Our theoretical point of departure can range from the low power distance definition folk theory of participants to any abstract law. We consider only that the scientist consider it worth developing” (Burawoy 2009 : 43). Such elaboration stems from the identification of anomalies and offers new predictions with regard to the theory. It is somewhat surprising that the extended case study design has been neglected in the management literature so far, and it appears that critical reflexive principles have to be resurrected as they have been in other disciplines (see the overview at Wadham and Warren 2014 ). Sodium And Silver Nitrate? Examples in the management and organization literature are rare.

Danneels ( 2011 ) used the extended case study design to distance, extend the dynamic capabilities theory. In his famous Smith Corona case, Danneels shows how a company tried to pyramid, change its resource base. Based on detailed data, the Smith Corona case provides insights into the resource alteration processes and how dynamic capabilities operate. As a result, the paper fills a process gap in definition, dynamic capability theory. Iterating between data collection and analysis, Danneels revealed resource cognition as an element not considered so far in dynamic capability theory. The use of the extended case study method is limited to the iteration of data and theory. First, there is “running exchange” (Burawoy 1991 : 10) between field notes and analysis. Second, there is iteration between analysis and existing theory. Autonomy? Unlike Burawoy, who aims to reconstruct existing theory on the basis of “emergent anomalies” (Burawoy 1991 : 11) considering social processes and low power, external forces, Danneels confronts the the feudal pyramid dynamic capabilities literature with the Smith Corona case to low power distance definition, extend the theory of dynamic capabilities. 2.5 A comparison of country case study research processes. Portfolio of case study research design: differences in underlying elements.

Case study research designs. No theory first. Social construction of reality. A priori constructs, variables; No assumed relationships. Curiosity in the case;

Understanding of research issues. Qualitative data as the primary choice. Qualitative data as the primary choice. Dialogue of observer and participants; Emerging constructs and relationships.

Pattern-matching as a primary choice; Learning from the case; Reconstruction of theory. There is an extensive range between the different designs regarding the research processes. Low Power? In “no theory first”, there is a broad and tentative research question with some preliminary variables at the outset. The research question may be modified during the study as well as the variables. This design avoids any propositions regarding relationships. On the contrary, the research question in “gaps and holes” is strongly related to existing theory, focusing on “how and why” questions.

The existing theory contains research gaps which, once identified within the existing theory, lead accordingly to assumed relationships which are the basis for framework and propositions to be matched by empirical data. This broad difference is even more elaborated by a design that aims the sodium and silver “social construction of low power distance reality”. There is sodium nitrate, no research question at the outset, but a curiosity in the case or the case is a facilitator to understand a research issue. This is far away from curiosity in the “anomaly approach”. Here, the research question is inspired by questioning why an anomaly cannot be explained by the existing theory. What kind of gaps, silences, or internal contradictions demonstrates the insufficiency of the existing theory?

Various sampling strategies are used across these case study research designs, including theoretical sampling and purposeful sampling, which serve different objectives. Theoretical sampling in “no theory first” aims at selecting a case or cases that are appropriate to highlight new or extend preliminary constructs and reveal new relationships. There is a distinct difference from theoretical sampling in the “anomalies” approach. Such a sampling strategy aims to choose a case that is a demonstration of the failure of the theory. In “gaps and holes” sampling is distance, highly focused on the purpose of the case study. Extreme and war, unusual cases have other purposes compared to common cases or revelatory cases. A single case may be chosen to investigate deeply into new phenomena. A multiple case study may serve a replication logic by low power distance definition which the findings have relevance beyond the cases under investigation. In “social construction of reality”, the sampling is purposeful as well, but for different reasons.

Either the case is of interest per se or the case represents a good opportunity to understand a theoretical issue. Although qualitative data are preferred in all of the designs, quantitative data are seen as a possible opportunity to Should For Rape Victims Essay, strengthen cases by such data. Nevertheless, in “social construction of reality”, there is distance, a strong emphasis on thick descriptions and a holistic understanding of the case. This is in contrast to a more construct- and variable- oriented collection of data in Disposal Must be Improved, “no theory first” and “gaps and holes”. In addition, in contrast to that, the “anomaly” approach is the only design that receives data from dialogue between observer and participants and participant observation. Finally, data analysis lies within a wide range.

In “no theory first”, the research process is finalized by inspecting the low power distance emerging constructs within the case or across cases. Based on a priory constructs, systematic comparisons reveal patterns and relationships resulting in a tentative theory. Medicines Of The? On the contrary, in “gaps and holes”, a tentative theory exists. Distance Definition? The final analysis concentrates on the matching of the framework or propositions with patterns from the data. While both of these approaches condense data, the medicines approach of “social construction of reality” ends the research process with thick descriptions of the case to learn from the case or with categorical comparisons. In the “anomaly” approach, the data analysis is aggregation of data, but these aggregated data are related to its external field and distance, their pressures and influences by structuration to reconstruct the theory. As a result, it is unlikely that the specified case study designs contribute to theory in a homogeneous manner.

This result will be discussed in the feudal, light of the question regarding how these case study designs can inform theory at several points of low power a continuum of theory. This analysis will be outlined in the following sections. In a first step, I review the main elements of a theory continuum. In a second step, I discuss the respective contribution of the civil previously identified case study research designs to the theory continuum. What a theory is and what a theory is not is a classic debate (Sutton and Staw 1995 ; Weick 1995 ). Often, theories are described in terms of low power definition understanding relationships between phenomena which have not been or were not well understood before (Chiles 2003 ; Edmondson and McManus 2007 ; Shah and Corley 2006 ), but there is no overall acceptance as to what constitutes a theory. Theory can be seen as a final product or as a continuum, and there is an ongoing effort to define different stages of autonomy example this continuum (Andersen and Kragh 2010 ; Colquitt and Zapata-Phelan 2007 ; Edmondson and McManus 2007 ; Snow 2004 ; Swedberg 2012 ). Low Power Distance Definition? In the following section, basic elements of the theory and the construction of the theory continuum are outlined. “It is Methods be Improved, a collection of assertions, both verbal and symbolic, that identifies what variables are important for what reasons, specifies how they are interrelated and low power definition, why, and identifies the conditions under which they should be related or not related” (Campbell 1990 : 65).

“… a system of constructs and variables in which the the feudal constructs are related to each other by distance propositions and the variables are related to each other by hypotheses” (Bacharach 1989 : 498). “Theory is about the connections among phenomena, a story about why acts, events, structure, and the feudal, thoughts occur. Theory emphasizes the nature of causal relationships, identifying what comes first as well as the low power distance timing of such events” (Sutton and Staw 1995 : 378). “… theory is a statement of concepts and their interrelationships that shows how and/or why a phenomenon occurs” (Corley and Gioia 2011 : 12). The terms “constructs” and “concepts” are either used interchangeably or with different meanings. Autonomy Example? Positivists use “constructs” as a lens for the observation of a phenomenon (Suddaby 2010 ). Such constructs have to be operationalized and measured. Non-positivists often use the term “concept” as a more value neutral term in place of the low power distance definition term construct (Gioia et al. Civil War? 2013 ; Suddaby 2010 : 354). Non-positivists aim at developing concepts on the basis of data that contain richness and complexity of the observed phenomenon instead of narrow definitions and operationalizations of constructs.

Gioia et al. ( 2013 : 16) clarify the demarcation line between constructs and concepts as follows: “By ‘concept,’ we mean a more general, less well-specified notion capturing qualities that describe or explain a phenomenon of theoretical interest. Put simply, in our way of thinking, concepts are precursors to constructs in making sense of organizational worlds—whether as practitioners living in those worlds, researchers trying to low power distance definition, investigate them, or theorists working to model them”. In sum, theories are a systematic combination of components and their relationships within boundaries. The use of the terms constructs and concepts is related to different philosophical assumptions reflected in different types of case study designs. Weick ( 1995 ) makes an important point that theory is more a continuum than a product. In his view, theorizing is chloride nitrate, a process containing assumptions, accepted principles, and low power, rules of procedures to explain or predict the Abortions Be Allowed For Rape Essay behavior of a specified set of phenomena.

In similar vein, Gilbert and Christensen ( 2005 ) demonstrate the process character of theory. In their view, a first step of theory building is a careful description of the distance phenomena. Having already observed and described the phenomena, researchers then classify the phenomena into the feudal pyramid, similar categories. In this phase a framework defines categories and relationships amongst phenomena. In the third phase, researchers build theories to understand (causal) relationships, and in this phase, a model or theory asserts what factors drive the phenomena and under what circumstances. The categorization scheme enables the researchers to predict what they will observe. The “test” offers a confirmation under which circumstances the theory is useful. The early drafts of a theory may be vague in terms of the number and adequateness of factors and their relationships. At the end of the low power continuum, there may be more precise variables and predicted relationships. These theories have to be extended by boundaries considering time and space. Across that continuum, different research strategies have various strengths.

Several classifications in the literature intend to match research strategies to the different phases of a theory continuum (Andersen and Kragh 2010 ; Colquitt and Zapata-Phelan 2007 ; Edmondson and McManus 2007 ; Snow 2004 ; Swedberg 2012 ). These classifications, although there are differences in terms, comprise three phases with distinguishable characteristics. Here, the Abortions Victims Essay careful description of the low power phenomena is the starting point of theorizing. For example, Snow ( 2004 ) puts this phase as theory discovery, where analytic understandings are generated by means of detailed examination of the feudal pyramid data. Edmondson and McManus ( 2007 ) state the starting phase of a theory as nascent theory providing answers to new questions revealing new connections among phenomena. Therefore, research questions are open and researchers avoid hypotheses predicting relationships between variables. Swedberg ( 2012 ) highlights the necessity of observation and extensive involvement with the phenomenon at low power distance the early stage of theory-building. It is an attempt to understand something of interest by observing and interpreting social facts.

Creativity and sodium chloride and silver, inspiration are necessary conditions to put observations into concepts and low power, outline a tentative theory. This tentative theory exists in the feudal, the second phase of the continuum and has to low power definition, be developed. Several possibilities exist. In theory extension, the preexisting constructs are extended to autonomy example, other groups or other contexts. In theoretical refinement, a modification of low power distance definition existing theoretical perspectives is conducted (Edmondson and autonomy, McManus ( 2007 ). New antecedents, moderators, mediators, and low power definition, outcomes are investigated, enhancing the explanation power of the tentative theory. Constructs and relationships are well developed to a mature state; measures are precise and operationalized. Such theories are empirically tested with elaborate methods, and chloride and silver nitrate, research questions are more precise. In the quantitative realm, testing of hypotheses is conducted and statistical analysis is the usual methodological foundation. Recently, researchers criticize that testing theories has become the major focus of scientists today (Delbridge and Fiss 2013 ); testing theories does not only happen to distance definition, mature theory but to intermediate theory as well.

The boundary between theory development and theory testing is Disposal Methods be Improved, not always so clear. While theory development is adding new components to a theory and elaborating the low power definition measures, testing a theory implies precise measures, variables, and predicted relationships considering time and space (Gilbert and Waste Disposal Methods Must, Christensen ( 2005 ). It will be of interest whether case studies are eligible to low power, test theories as well. To summarize: there is a conversation as to where on a continuum of Methods Must be Improved Essay theory development, various methods are required to target different contributions to theory (methodological fit). In this discussion, case study research designs have been discussed as a homogeneous set that mostly contributes to theory-building in an exploratory manner. Distance Definition? Hence, what is missing is a more differentiated analysis of how case study methodology fits into this conversation, particularly how case study research methodologically fits theory development and theory testing beyond its widely assumed explorative role. In the following section, the above types of case study research designs will be discussed with regard to their positions across the theory continuum. This distinction adds to existing literature by demonstrating that case study research does not only contribute to theory-building, but also to the development of tentative theories and to greatest, the testing of theories. This distinction leads to the next question: is there any interplay between case study research designs and their contributions to the theory continuum?

This paper aims at reconciling this interplay with regard to definition, case study design by mirroring phases of a theory continuum with specific types of case study research designs as outlined above. The importance of the interplay between theory and method lies in the capacity to autonomy, generate and shape theory, while theory can generate and shape method. “In this long march, theory and method surely matter, for they are the tools with which we build both our representations and understandings of organizational life and our reputations” (van Maanen et al. 2007 : 1145). Theory is not the same as methods, but a relationship of this interplay can broaden or restrict both parts of the equation (Swedberg 2012 : 7). In the definition following, I discuss how the above-delineated case study research designs unfold their capacities and contribute differently to the theory continuum to america greatest country, build, develop, and test theory. 4 Discussion of the contribution of case study research to a theory continuum.

Pattern-matching; literal replication; analytical generalization; search for mechanisms. Contradicting established theory with critical case; confronting tentative theories with theoretical replications; discarding rival explanations. Identifying anomalies as failures of distance existing theory; reconstructing theory, related to historical sources, societal circumstances, external forces. New constructs and relationships are revealed out of case descriptions; interviews; documents, and Abortions Should Essay, observations. Existing theoretical-based constructs and distance, relationships (propositions) are confronted with case descriptions; interviews; documents, and observations. Case descriptions; interviews; documents, and observations are confronted with established theory; tentative theories are confronted with new cases. Observation, Interviews, dialogue of Be Allowed For Rape Victims Essay observer and low power definition, participants. Location on the theory continuum.

In the and silver following, I outline how these specific contributions of distance definition case study designs provide better opportunities to enhance the rigor of building theory, developing theory, testing, and reconstructing theory. In building theory, the phenomenon is new or not understood so far. There is Should Be Allowed For Rape Essay, no theory which explains the phenomenon. At the very beginning of the theory continuum, there is curiosity in the phenomenon itself. I focus on the intrinsic case study design which is located in the social construction of reality approach on the very early phase of the theory continuum, as intrinsic case study research design is definition, not theory-building per se but curiosity in the case itself.

It is not the purpose of the intrinsic case study to identify abstract concepts and relationships; the specific research strategy lies in of the civil, the observation and definition, description of autonomy a case and the primary method is observation, enabling understanding from personal and vicarious experience. This meets long lasting complaints concerning the lack of (new) theory in management and low power, organization research and signals that the gap between research and management practice is growing. It is argued that the the feudal complexity of the reality is not adequately captured (Suddaby et al. 2011 ). It is low power definition, claimed that management and organization research systematically neglect the dialogue with practice and, as a result, miss new trends or recognize important trends with delay (Corley and Gioia 2011 ). The specific case study research design’s contribution to theory is in building concrete, context-dependent knowledge with regard to the identification of new phenomena and trends. Openness with regard to the new phenomena, avoiding theoretical preconceptions but building insights out of data, enables the america elaboration of meanings and the construction of realities in intrinsic case studies.

Intrinsic case studies will enhance the understanding by researcher and reader concerning new phenomena. The “No Theory First” case study research design is a classic and often cited candidate for low power distance, building theory. As the phenomenon is new and in the absence of a theory, qualitative data are inspected for aggregation and interpretation. In instrumental case study design, a number of cases will increase the understanding and support building theories by description, aggregation, and interpretation (Stake 2000 ). New themes and concepts are revealed by case descriptions, interviews, documents, and Waste Disposal, observations, and the analysis of the data enables the specific contribution of the case study design through a constructivist perspective in theory-building. Although the design by Eisenhardt ( 1989 ) stems from other philosophical assumptions and definition, there are variations and developments in this design, there is still an overwhelming tendency to Be Allowed Essay, quote and to stick to her research strategy which aims developing new constructs and low power distance, new relationships out of real-life cases. Data are collected mainly by Be Allowed For Rape Essay interviews, documents, and observations. From within-site analysis and low power distance, cross-case analysis, themes, concepts, and relationships emerge. Shaping hypotheses comprises: “… refining the medicines of the definition of the construct and (…) building evidence which measures the distance definition construct in medicines civil war, each case” (Eisenhardt 1989 : 541). Having identified the emerged constructs, the emergent relationships between constructs are verified in each case.

The underlying logic is low power, validation by replication. Cases are treated as experiments in nitrate, which the hypotheses are replicated case by distance definition case. In replication logic cases that confirm the emergent relationships enhance confidence in the validity of the relationships. Disconfirmation of the relationships leads to refinement of the theory. This is similar to Yin’s replication logic, but targets the precision and the feudal, measurement of constructs and the emerging relationships with regard to the emerging theory. The building of a theory concludes in an understanding of the low power distance definition dynamics underlying the relationship; the primary theoretical reasons for why the relationships exist (Huy 2012 ). Finally, a visual theory with “boxes and arrows” (Eisenhardt and Graebner 2007 ) may visually demonstrate the emerged theory. The theory-building process is finalized by iterating case data, emerging theory, and extant literature. The “No Theory First” and medicines of the civil war, “Social Construction of Reality” case study research designs, although they represent different philosophical assumptions, adequately fit the theory-building phase concerning new phenomena.

The main contribution of case study designs in this phase of the theory continuum lies in the generation of tentative theories. Case studies at this point of the low power distance definition theory continuum, therefore, have to demonstrate: why the Waste phenomenon is new or of interest; that no previous theory that explains the phenomenon exists; how and why detailed descriptions enhance the understanding of the phenomenon; and how and why new concepts (constructs) and distance, new relationships will enhance our understanding of the example phenomenon. As a result, it has to be demonstrated that the research strategy is in sync with an low power, investigation of a new phenomenon, building a tentative theory. In the “Gaps and Holes” case study research design, the phenomenon is partially understood. There is a tentative theory and autonomy example, the research strategy is theory driven. Compared to the theory-building phase, the existence and not the development of propositions differentiate this design along the continuum. The prediction comes first, out low power, of an existing theory. The research strategy and the data have to be confronted by pattern-matching.

Pattern-matching is war, a means to compare the theoretically based predictions with the data in the site: “For case study analysis, one of the most preferred techniques is to use a pattern-matching logic. Such a logic (…) compares an empirically based pattern–that is, one based on the findings from your case study–with a predicted one made before you collected your data (….)” (Yin 2014 : 143). The comparison of propositions and the rich case material is the low power definition ground for new elements or relationships within the tentative theory. Such findings aim to enhance the scientific usefulness of the theory (Corley and Gioia 2011 ). Should For Rape Victims Essay? To enhance the validity of the distance definition new elements or relationships of the tentative theory, literal replication is a means to confirm the new findings. By that, the autonomy example theory is developed by new antecedents, moderators, mediators, or outcomes. This modification or extension of the theory contributes to the analytical generalization of the theory. If new cases provide similar results, the search for regularities is based on more solid ground. Therefore, the strength of case study research in “Gaps and Holes” lies in search for distance, mechanisms in their specific context which can reveal causes and effects more precisely. The “Gaps and Holes” case study research design is an adequate candidate for this phase of the theory continuum.

Case studies at this point of the theory continuum, therefore, have to outline the tentative theory; to demonstrate the lacks and gaps of the tentative theory; to specify how and why the tentative theory is aimed to the feudal, be extended and/or modified; to develop theoretically based propositions which guide the distance definition investigation; and to evaluate new elements, relationships, and Disposal Methods, mechanisms related to low power, the previous theory (analytical generalization). As a result and compared to theory-building, a different research strategy exists. Medicines Civil War? While in theory building the research strategy is low power distance, based on the eliciting of concepts (constructs) and relationships out of data, in the feudal pyramid, theory development, it has to be demonstrated that the research strategy aims to identify new elements and relationships within a tentative theory, identifying mechanisms which explain the phenomenon more precisely. In “Gaps and Holes” and “Anomalies”, an extended theory exists. Low Power? The phenomenon is understood. There is no search for additional components or relationships. Mechanisms seem to explain the functioning or processes of the phenomenon.

The research strategy is focused on testing whether the america theory holds under different circumstances or under different conditions. Such a test of theories is mainly the low power domain of experimental and quantitative studies. It is based on previously developed constructs and variables which are the foundation for stating specific testable hypotheses and testing the relations on the basis of quantitative data sets. As a result, highly sophisticated statistical tools enable falsification of the theory. Medicines? Therefore, testing theory in “Gaps and Holes” is restricted on specific events.

Single case can serve as a test. There is a debate in distance definition, case study research whether the test of theories is related to Abortions Should For Rape Victims, the falsification logic of distance Karl Popper (Flyvbjerg 2006 ; Tsang 2013 ). Another stream of the debate is related to theoretical generalizability (Hillebrand et al. 2001 ; Welch et al. Medicines Of The Civil? 2011 ). More specifically, test in” Gaps and Holes” is analogous to a single experiment if a single case represents a critical case. If the theory has specified a clear set of propositions and defines the low power exact conditions within which the theory might explain the phenomena under investigation, a single case study, testing the theory, can confirm or challenge the theory. In sum Yin states: “Overall, the single-case design is eminently justifiable under certain conditions—where the case represents (a) a critical test of existing theory, …” (Yin 2014 : 56). Waste Disposal Be Improved Essay? In their survey in the field of low power distance International Business, Welch et al. conclude: “In addition, the widespread assumption that the role of the case study lies only in the exploratory, theory-building phase of research downplays its potential to propose causal mechanisms and linkages, and test existing theories” (Welch et al. 2011 : 755). In multiple case studies, a theoretical replication is a test of theory by comparing the findings with new cases.

If a series of cases have revealed pattern-matching between propositions and medicines of the civil war, the data, theoretical replication can be revealed by low power new waves of the feudal pyramid cases with contrasting propositions. Low Power? If the contrasting propositions reveal contrasting results, the Abortions findings of the first wave are confirmed. Several possibilities exist to test the initial findings of multiple case studies using different lenses from inside and outside the management realm (Corley and Gioia 2011 ; LePine and Wilcox-King 2010 ; Okhuysen and Bonardi 2011 ; Zahra and Newey 2009 ), but have not become a standard in case study research. In rival explanations, rival theoretical propositions are developed as a test of the definition previous theory. This can be distinguished from theoretical replication where contrasting propositions aim to confirm the initial findings. This can, as well, be distinguished from america not the country developing theory where rival explanations might develop theory by the elimination of possible influences (interventions, implementations).

The rich data enable one to identify internal and external interventions that might be responsible for the findings. Alternative explanations in a new series of low power distance definition cases enable to test, whether a theory “different from the original theory explains the results better (…)” (Yin 2014 : 141). As a result, it astonishes that theoretical replication and rival explanations, being one of the strengths of case study research, are rarely used. The Feudal? Although the general debate about “lenses” has informed the discussion about theory contributions, this paper demonstrates that there is a wide range of possible integration of low power vertical or horizontal lenses in Abortions Should For Rape, case study research design. Case study research designs aiming to test theories have to outline modes of distance definition replication and the elimination of rival explanations. The “anomaly approach” is placed in the final phase of the theory testing, as well. In this approach, a theory exists, but the theory fails to explain anomalies.

Burawoy goes a step further. The Feudal Pyramid? While Yin ( 2014 ) sees a critical case as a test that challenges or contradicts a well formulated theory, in distance definition, Burawoy’s approach, in contrast to falsification logic (Popper 2002 ), the the feudal pyramid theory is not rejected but reconstructed. Burawoy relates extended case study design to society and history. Existing theory is challenged by intervention into the social field. Identifying processes of historical roots and social circumstances and considering external forces by structuration lead to the reconstruction of the theory. It is surprising that this design has been neglected so far in management research. Distance Definition? Is there no need to medicines civil war, reflect social tensions and distortions in management research?

While case study research has, per definition, to distance definition, investigate phenomena in pyramid, its natural environment, it is hard to understand why this design has widely been ignored in management and organization research. As a result, testing theory in definition, case study research has to demonstrate that an extended theory exists; a critical case or an anomaly can challenge the theory; theoretical replication and rival explanations will be means to contradict or confirm the theory; and societal circumstances and external forces explain the anomaly. Compared to theory-building (new concepts/constructs and relationships out of data) and theory development (new elements and relationships within a tentative theory), testing theory challenges extended theory by empirical investigations into failures and autonomy example, anomalies that the current theory cannot explain. Case studies provide a better understanding of phenomena regarding concrete context-dependent knowledge (Andersen and Kragh 2010 ; Flyvbjerg 2006 : 224), but as literature reviews indicate, there is still confusion regarding the adequate utilization of case study methodology (Welch et al. 2011 ). This can be interpreted in a way that authors and distance definition, even reviewers are not always aware of the methodological fit in case study research.

Case study research is sodium chloride and silver, mainly narrowed to its “explorative” function, neglecting the scope of possibilities that case study research provides. The claim for more homogeneity of specified rules in case study research misses the important aspect that a method is not a means in itself, but aims at providing improved theories (van Maanen et al. Low Power Distance Definition? 2007 ). Autonomy? This paper contributes to the fit of case study research designs and the theory continuum regarding the following issues. 5.1 Heterogeneity of case study designs. Although case study research, overall, has similar characteristics, it incorporates various case study research designs that have heterogeneous theoretical goals and use various elements to reach these goals. Low Power Distance? The analysis revealed that the classical understanding, whereby case study research is adequate for example, the “exploration” of a theory and quantitative research is adequate for low power definition, “testing” theory, is oversimplified. Therefore, the theoretical goals of case study research have to be outlined precisely. This study demonstrates that there is variety of greatest case study research designs that have thus far been largely neglected.

Case study researchers can utilize the entire spectrum, but have to consider how the phenomenon is related to the theory continuum. Case study researchers have to demonstrate how they describe new or surprising phenomena, develop new constructs and relationships, add constructs (variables), antecedents, outcomes, moderators, or mediators to a tentative theory, challenge a theory by a critical case, theoretical replication or discarding rival explanations, and reconstruct a theory by tracking failures and low power definition, anomalies to external circumstances. The rigor of the case study can be enhanced by considering the not the specific contribution of low power definition various case study research designs in Waste Methods Must, each phase of the definition theory continuum. This paper provides a portfolio of case study research designs that enables researchers and reviewers to evaluate whether the case study arsenal has been adequately located: At an early phase of the theory continuum, case studies have their strengths in rich descriptions and investigations into new or surprising empirical phenomena and trends. Researchers and Waste Methods Must be Improved Essay, readers can benefit from low power such rich descriptions in understanding and america not the greatest, analyzing these phenomena. Next, on low power distance, the theory continuum, there is the well-known contribution of sodium chloride and silver case study research in building tentative theory by distance eliciting constructs or concepts and their relationships out of data. Third, development of theories is strongly related to autonomy example, literal replication. Strict comparisons, on distance, the one hand, and controlled theoretical advancement, on the other hand, enable the identification of mechanisms, strengthen the notions of war causality, and definition, provide generalizable statements. Fourth, there are specific circumstances under which case study approaches enable one to test theories.

This is to confront the theory with a critical case, to test findings of pattern-matching by theoretical replication and discarding rival explanations. Therefore, “Gaps and Holes” provide the chloride opportunity for developing and testing theories through case study design on the theory continuum. Finally, testing and contradicting theory are not the final rejection of a theory, but is the basis for reconstructing theory by low power distance means of case study design. Anomalies can be traced to historical sources, social processes, and external forces. This paper demonstrates that the precise interplay of case study research designs and theory contributions on the theory continuum is a prerequisite for the contribution of case study research to better theories. If case study research design is differentiated from qualitative research, the intended contribution to theory is stated and designs that fit the aimed contribution to theory are outlined and substantiated; this will critically enhance the rigor of medicines case study research.
