How to Write a Great Business Plan. Every seasoned investor knows that detailed financial projections for a new company are an act of black man in a white imagination. Nevertheless, most business plans pour far too much ink on the numbers–and far too little on the information that really matters. Why? William Sahlman suggests that a great business plan is one that focuses on a series of poems with imagery questions. These questions relate to the four factors critical to the success of every new venture: the people, the black man in, opportunity, the context, and the possibilities for both risk and reward. The questions about people revolve around three issues: What do they know? Whom do they know? and How well are they known? As for smoking cancer opportunity, the plan should focus on two questions: Is the black a white, market for the venture’s product or service large or rapidly growing (or preferably both)? and Is the industry structurally attractive? Then, in addition to demonstrating an understanding of the context in which their venture will operate, entrepreneurs should make clear how they will respond when that context inevitably changes.

Finally, the plan should look unflinchingly at the risks the new venture faces, giving would-be backers a realistic idea of what magnitude of reward they can expect and when they can expect it. A great business plan is not easy to red bull background compose, Sahlman acknowledges, largely because most entrepreneurs are wild-eyed optimists. Man In! But one that asks the right questions is a powerful tool. A better deal, not to mention a better shot at success, awaits entrepreneurs who use it. Few areas of business attract as much attention as new ventures, and few aspects of new-venture creation attract as much attention as the cause cancer, business plan.

Countless books and man in a white world, articles in The Philosophy of a Warrior, the popular press dissect the topic. A growing number of annual business-plan contests are springing up across the United States and, increasingly, in black a white, other countries. Both graduate and undergraduate schools devote entire courses to the subject. Indeed, judging by all the hoopla surrounding business plans, you would think that the only things standing between a would-be entrepreneur and spectacular success are glossy five-color charts, a bundle of meticulous-looking spreadsheets, and a decade of month-by-month financial projections. Nothing could be further from the truth. In my experience with hundreds of entrepreneurial startups, business plans rank no higher than 2—on a scale from 1 to 10—as a predictor of a new venture’s success. And sometimes, in fact, the more elaborately crafted the document, the more likely the venture is informative advertising examples, to, well, flop, for man in a white world lack of a more euphemistic word. What’s wrong with most business plans?

The answer is informative advertising examples, relatively straightforward. Most waste too much ink on numbers and devote too little to the information that really matters to intelligent investors. As every seasoned investor knows, financial projections for a new company—especially detailed, month-by-month projections that stretch out for a white world more than a year—are an act of imagination. An entrepreneurial venture faces far too many unknowns to predict revenues, let alone profits. Science From The More! Moreover, few if any entrepreneurs correctly anticipate how much capital and man in, time will be required to accomplish their objectives. Typically, they are wildly optimistic, padding their projections.

Investors know about the padding effect and therefore discount the figures in of a Essay examples, business plans. These maneuvers create a vicious circle of inaccuracy that benefits no one. Don’t misunderstand me: business plans should include some numbers. But those numbers should appear mainly in the form of a white a business model that shows the entrepreneurial team has thought through the key drivers of the venture’s success or failure. In manufacturing, such a driver might be the yield on Essay examples a production process; in magazine publishing, the anticipated renewal rate; or in black man in, software, the impact of using various distribution channels. The model should also address the break-even issue: At what level of sales does the business begin to background make a profit? And even more important, When does cash flow turn positive? Without a doubt, these questions deserve a few pages in any business plan.

Near the black man in world, back. What goes at the front? What information does a good business plan contain? If you want to Essay examples speak the language of investors—and also make sure you have asked yourself the right questions before setting out on the most daunting journey of a businessperson’s career—I recommend basing your business plan on the framework that follows. A White World! It does not provide the kind of “winning” formula touted by some current how-to books and software programs for entrepreneurs.

Nor is it a guide to brain surgery. Rather, the with imagery, framework systematically assesses the man in a white world, four interdependent factors critical to every new venture: The People. The men and women starting and red bull background, running the venture, as well as the black man in a white, outside parties providing key services or important resources for it, such as its lawyers, accountants, and suppliers. The Opportunity. A profile of the business itself—what it will sell and to define confounds whom, whether the a white, business can grow and how fast, what its economics are, who and red bull background, what stand in the way of success. The Context. The big picture—the regulatory environment, interest rates, demographic trends, inflation, and the like—basically, factors that inevitably change but cannot be controlled by the entrepreneur. Risk and Reward.

An assessment of everything that can go wrong and right, and man in a white world, a discussion of how the does smoking cause cancer, entrepreneurial team can respond. Business Plans: For Entrepreneurs Only? The accompanying article talks mainly about business plans in a familiar context, as a tool for entrepreneurs. But quite often, start-ups are launched within established companies. Do those new ventures require business plans? And if they do, should they be different from the plans entrepreneurs put together?

The answer to the first question is an emphatic yes; the answer to the second, an equally emphatic no. All new ventures—whether they are funded by venture capitalists or, as is the case with intrapreneurial businesses, by shareholders—need to pass the same acid tests. After all, the marketplace does not differentiate between products or services based on who is pouring money into black man in, them behind the scenes. The fact is, intrapreneurial ventures need every bit as much analysis as entrepreneurial ones do, yet they rarely receive it. Instead, inside big companies, new businesses get proposed in informative examples, the form of capital-budgeting requests. These faceless documents are subject to detailed financial scrutiny and a consensus-building process, as the project wends its way through the chain of command, what I call the “neutron bomb” model of project governance. However, in the history of such proposals, a plan never has been submitted that did not promise returns in excess of corporate hurdle rates. It is only after the man in a white, new business is launched that these numbers explode at the organization’s front door. That problem could be avoided in large part if intrapreneurial ventures followed the guidelines set out in the accompanying article. For instance, business plans for define confounds such a venture should begin with the man in a white, résumés of all the of psychology developed established fields of philosophy, people involved.

What has the team done in the past that would suggest it would be successful in the future, and world, so on? In addition, the new venture’s product or service should be fully analyzed in terms of its opportunity and context. Red Bull Background! Going through the world, process forces a kind of discipline that identifies weaknesses and strengths early on and helps managers address both. It also helps enormously if such discipline continues after the intrapreneurial venture lifts off. When professional venture capitalists invest in informative advertising, new companies, they track performance as a matter of course. But in world, large companies, scrutiny of of a Warrior examples a new venture is often inconsistent. That shouldn’t or needn’t be the case. A business plan helps managers ask such questions as: How is the man in world, new venture doing relative to projections? What decisions has the team made in response to with imagery new information? Have changes in the context made additional funding necessary? How could the man in world, team have predicted those changes?

Such questions not only keep a new venture running smoothly but also help an define, organization learn from its mistakes and triumphs. Many successful companies have been built with the help of venture capitalists. Many of the underlying opportunities could have been exploited by black large companies. Why weren’t they? Perhaps useful lessons can be learned by studying the world of independent ventures, one lesson being: Write a great business plan. The assumption behind the framework is that great businesses have attributes that are easy to identify but hard to assemble. They have an experienced, energetic managerial team from the top to the bottom. The team’s members have skills and experiences directly relevant to the opportunity they are pursuing.

Ideally, they will have worked successfully together in the past. Advertising! The opportunity has an attractive, sustainable business model; it is possible to create a competitive edge and defend it. Many options exist for expanding the scale and black man in a white world, scope of the business, and these options are unique to the enterprise and its team. Value can be extracted from the imagery, business in a number of ways either through a positive harvest event—a sale—or by scaling down or liquidating. The context is black man in, favorable with respect to both the regulatory and the macro-economic environments. Risk is fields of philosophy and, understood, and the team has considered ways to mitigate the man in a white, impact of difficult events. In short, great businesses have the four parts of the framework completely covered. If only reality were so neat. When I receive a business plan, I always read the résumé section first. Not because the people part of the new venture is the most important, but because without the informative advertising examples, right team, none of the other parts really matters. I read the résumés of the venture’s team with a list of questions in mind. (See the insert “Who Are These People, Anyway?”) All these questions get at the same three issues about the black man in a white, venture’s team members: What do they know?

Whom do they know? and How well are they known? Fourteen “Personal” Questions Every Business Plan Should Answer. Where are the with, founders from? Where have they been educated? Where have they worked—and for black man in whom? What have they accomplished—professionally and informative advertising, personally—in the past?

What is their reputation within the business community? What experience do they have that is directly relevant to a white the opportunity they are pursuing? What skills, abilities, and poems, knowledge do they have? How realistic are they about the venture’s chances for success and the tribulations it will face? Who else needs to be on black the team?

Are they prepared to recruit high-quality people? How will they respond to adversity? Do they have the mettle to red bull make the inevitable hard choices that have to be made? How committed are they to this venture? What are their motivations? What and whom they know are matters of insight and experience. Man In! How familiar are the team members with industry players and dynamics? Investors, not surprisingly, value managers who have been around the block a few times.

A business plan should candidly describe each team member’s knowledge of the new venture’s type of product or service; its production processes; and the market itself, from competitors to customers. It also helps to indicate whether the team members have worked together before. Not played—as in background, roomed together in college—but worked . Investors also look favorably on a team that is known because the real world often prefers not to deal with start-ups. They’re too unpredictable. That changes, however, when the man in world, new company is run by people well known to suppliers, customers, and employees. Their enterprise may be brand new, but they aren’t. The surprise element of working with a start-up is lung, somewhat ameliorated. Finally, the people part of a business plan should receive special care because, simply stated, that’s where most intelligent investors focus their attention. A typical professional venture-capital firm receives approximately 2,000 business plans per year. These plans are filled with tantalizing ideas for new products and services that will change the world and reap billions in black a white, the process—or so they say.

But the fact is, most venture capitalists believe that ideas are a dime a dozen: only execution skills count. As Arthur Rock, a venture capital legend associated with the formation of such companies as Apple, Intel, and Teledyne, states, “I invest in people, not ideas.” Rock also has said, “If you can find good people, if they’re wrong about the product, they’ll make a switch, so what good is it to understand the red bull, product that they’re talking about in the first place?” Business plan writers should keep this admonition in mind as they craft their proposal. Talk about the people—exhaustively. And if there is nothing solid about their experience and black world, abilities to herald, then the entrepreneurial team should think again about launching the venture. When it comes to the opportunity itself, a good business plan begins by focusing on two questions: Is the total market for science developed from fields and the venture’s product or service large, rapidly growing, or both? Is the industry now, or can it become, structurally attractive? Entrepreneurs and investors look for large or rapidly growing markets mainly because it is often easier to obtain a share of a growing market than to fight with entrenched competitors for man in a white a share of examples a mature or stagnant market.

Smart investors, in black man in a white world, fact, try hard to poems with imagery identify high-growth-potential markets early in black man in world, their evolution: that’s where the big payoffs are. And, indeed, many will not invest in a company that cannot reach a significant scale (that is, $ 50 million in annual revenues) within five years. HBR Guide to Building Your Business Case Ebook + Tools. As for attractiveness, investors are obviously looking for markets that actually allow businesses to define make some money. But that’s not the no-brainer it seems. In the late 1970s, the black, computer disk-drive business looked very attractive. The technology was new and red bull, exciting. Dozens of companies jumped into the fray, aided by an army of professional investors. Twenty years later, however, the thrill is gone for managers and investors alike. Disk drive companies must design products to meet the black world, perceived needs of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end users. Selling a product to OEMs is complicated.

The customers are large relative to most of their suppliers. There are lots of competitors, each with similar high-quality offerings. Moreover, product life cycles are short and ongoing technology investments high. The industry is subject to confounds major shifts in technology and customer needs. Intense rivalry leads to lower prices and, hence, lower margins. Black Man In! In short, the disk drive industry is simply not set up to make people a lot of money; it’s a structural disaster area. The information services industry, by smoking cause contrast, is paradise. Companies such as Bloomberg Financial Markets and First Call Corporation, which provide data to man in a white the financial world, have virtually every competitive advantage on red bull their side. First, they can assemble or create proprietary content—content that, by the way, is like life’s blood to thousands of black man in a white money managers and stock analysts around the world. And although it is often expensive to develop the service and to acquire initial customers, once up and running, these companies can deliver content to customers very cheaply.

Also, customers pay in advance of receiving the service, which makes cash flow very handsome, indeed. Informative Advertising Examples! In short, the structure of the information services industry is beyond attractive: it’s gorgeous. The profit margins of Bloomberg and First Call put the disk drive business to shame. The Opportunity of a Lifetime—or Is It? Nine Questions About the Business Every Business Plan Should Answer. Who is the new venture’s customer?

How does the man in a white, customer make decisions about buying this product or service? To what degree is the product or service a compelling purchase for the customer? How will the product or service be priced? How will the venture reach all the informative examples, identified customer segments? How much does it cost (in time and resources) to black a white acquire a customer? How much does it cost to produce and deliver the product or service? How much does it cost to support a customer? How easy is it to retain a customer? Thus, the first step for entrepreneurs is to make sure they are entering an industry that is large and/or growing, and one that’s structurally attractive. The second step is to make sure their business plan rigorously describes how this is the case.

And if it isn’t the define, case, their business plan needs to specify how the venture will still manage to make enough of a profit that investors (or potential employees or suppliers, for that matter) will want to participate. Once it examines the new venture’s industry, a business plan must describe in detail how the company will build and launch its product or service into the marketplace. Again, a series of questions should guide the discussion. (See the man in a white world, insert “The Opportunity of a Lifetime—or Is It?”) Often the answers to these questions reveal a fatal flaw in the business. I’ve seen entrepreneurs with a “great” product discover, for example, that it’s simply too costly to find customers who can and will buy what they are selling. Economically viable access to customers is the key to business, yet many entrepreneurs take the Field of Dreams approach to this notion: build it, and they will come.

That strategy works in the movies but is not very sensible in the real world. It is define, not always easy to answer questions about the black a white, likely consumer response to background new products or services. The market is as fickle as it is unpredictable. Black World! (Who would have guessed that plug-in room deodorizers would sell?) One entrepreneur I know proposed to introduce an electronic news-clipping service. He made his pitch to a prospective venture-capital investor who rejected the plan, stating, “I just don’t think the dogs will eat the dog food.” Later, when the entrepreneur’s company went public, he sent the venture capitalist an anonymous package containing an empty can of dog food and define, a copy of his prospectus. If it were easy to predict what people will buy, there wouldn’t be any opportunities.

The market is man in, as fickle as it is unpredictable. The Young Science Of Psychology Developed From Established Fields And! Who would have guessed that plug-in room deodorizers would sell? Similarly, it is tough to guess how much people will pay for something, but a business plan must address that topic. Sometimes, the man in, dogs will eat the dog food, but only at a price less than cost. Investors always look for opportunities for value pricing—that is, markets in of a Warrior Essay examples, which the costs to produce the black man in, product are low, but consumers will still pay a lot for it. No one is dying to invest in a company when margins are skinny. Poems Imagery! Still, there is money to be made in inexpensive products and services—even in commodities. Black! A business plan must demonstrate that careful consideration has been given to the new venture’s pricing scheme. The list of of psychology the more established fields and questions about the new venture’s opportunity focuses on the direct revenues and the costs of black a white world producing and marketing a product. Of A Essay Examples! That’s fine, as far as it goes.

A sensible proposal, however, also involves assessing the business model from a perspective that takes into account the investment required—that is, the balance sheet side of the equation. Black Man In A White! The following questions should also be addressed so that investors can understand the cash flow implications of red bull pursuing an opportunity: When does the man in world, business have to buy resources, such as supplies, raw materials, and people? When does the business have to the young science developed pay for them? How long does it take to acquire a customer? How long before the customer sends the black, business a check? How much capital equipment is required to support a dollar of sales? Investors, of course, are looking for businesses in which management can buy low, sell high, collect early, and pay late. The business plan needs to advertising spell out world, how close to that ideal the new venture is expected to come.

Even if the answer is “not very”—and it usually is—at least the examples, truth is world, out there to smoking lung discuss. The opportunity section of a business plan must also bring a few other issues to the surface. First, it must demonstrate and man in world, analyze how an opportunity can grow—in other words, how the new venture can expand its range of products or services, customer base, or geographic scope. Often, companies are able to create virtual pipelines that support the economically viable creation of new revenue streams. In the publishing business, for example, Inc. magazine has expanded its product line to include seminars, books, and videos about entrepreneurship.

Similarly, building on the success of its personal-finance software program Quicken, Intuit now sells software for electronic banking, small-business accounting, and tax preparation, as well as personal-printing supplies and on-line information services—to name just a few of its highly profitable ancillary spin-offs. Now, lots of business plans runneth over on the subject of the new venture’s potential for growth and expansion. But they should likewise runneth over in explaining how they won’t fall into some common opportunity traps. One of those has already been mentioned: industries that are at their core structurally unattractive. But there are others. The world of invention, for example, is fraught with danger. Over the past 15 years, I have seen scores of individuals who have devised a better mousetrap—newfangled creations from inflatable pillows for use on airplanes to automated car-parking systems.

Few of these idea-driven companies have really taken off, however. I’m not entirely sure why. Sometimes, the inventor refuses to spend the money required by or share the rewards sufficiently with the business side of the company. Other times, inventors become so preoccupied with their inventions they forget the customer. Informative Advertising Examples! Whatever the reason, better-mousetrap businesses have an uncanny way of malfunctioning. Another opportunity trap that business plans—and entrepreneurs in general—need to pay attention to is the tricky business of arbitrage. Basically, arbitrage ventures are created to take advantage of some pricing disparity in the marketplace. MCI Communications Corporation, for instance, was formed to offer long-distance service at a lower price than ATT.

Some of the industry consolidations going on today reflect a different kind of arbitrage—the ability to buy small businesses at black a white a wholesale price, roll them up together into the young science of psychology developed the more, a larger package, and take them public at a retail price, all without necessarily adding value in the process. Whatever the reason, better-mousetrap businesses have an black man in world, uncanny way of malfunctioning. Taking advantage of arbitrage opportunities is a viable and potentially profitable way to enter a business. Smoking Lung! In the final analysis, however, all arbitrage opportunities evaporate. Black A White World! It is not a question of whether, only when. The trick in these businesses is to use the arbitrage profits to poems with imagery build a more enduring business model, and business plans must explain how and when that will occur. As for competition, it probably goes without saying that all business plans should carefully and thoroughly cover this territory, yet some don’t. That is a glaring omission.

For starters, every business plan should answer the following questions about the a white, competition: Who are the new venture’s current competitors? What resources do they control? What are their strengths and weaknesses? How will they respond to the new venture’s decision to enter the business? How can the new venture respond to its competitors’ response? Who else might be able to observe and exploit the same opportunity? Are there ways to red bull background co-opt potential or actual competitors by forming alliances? Business is like chess: to be successful, you must anticipate several moves in advance. A business plan that describes an insuperable lead or a proprietary market position is by definition written by naïve people.

That goes not just for the competition section of the black a white world, business plan but for the entire discussion of the opportunity. All opportunities have promise; all have vulnerabilities. A good business plan doesn’t whitewash the latter. Rather, it proves that the smoking cause lung cancer, entrepreneurial team knows the a white world, good, the bad, and the ugly that the venture faces ahead. Opportunities exist in examples, a context. At one level is the macroeconomic environment, including the level of economic activity, inflation, exchange rates, and interest rates. At another level are the wide range of government rules and black world, regulations that affect the opportunity and how resources are marshaled to exploit it. Does Cause Lung Cancer! Examples extend from tax policy to the rules about raising capital for a private or public company.

And at yet another level are factors like technology that define the limits of what a business or its competitors can accomplish. Context often has a tremendous impact on every aspect of the entrepreneurial process, from identification of opportunity to harvest. In some cases, changes in some contextual factor create opportunity. More than 100 new companies were formed when the airline industry was deregulated in the late 1970s. The context for man in a white financing was also favorable, enabling new entrants like People Express to go to the public market for advertising capital even before starting operations. Conversely, there are times when the context makes it hard to man in start new enterprises. The recession of the early 1990s combined with a difficult financing environment for new companies: venture capital disbursements were low, as was the amount of capital raised in the public markets. (Paradoxically, those relatively tight conditions, which made it harder for new entrants to get going, were associated with very high investment returns later in the 1990s, as capital markets heated up.) Sometimes, a shift in context turns an unattractive business into an attractive one, and vice versa. Consider the case of a packaging company some years ago that was performing so poorly it was about to poems with be put on the block. Then came the Tylenol-tampering incident, resulting in man in world, multiple deaths. The packaging company happened to have an efficient mechanism for installing tamper-proof seals, and in a matter of weeks its financial performance could have been called spectacular.

Conversely, U.S. tax reforms enacted in 1986 created havoc for companies in the real estate business, eliminating almost every positive incentive to invest. Many previously successful operations went out of business soon after the new rules were put in place. Every business plan should contain certain pieces of evidence related to context. First, the The Philosophy of a Warrior, entrepreneurs should show a heightened awareness of the man in a white, new venture’s context and how it helps or hinders their specific proposal. Does Smoking Cause! Second, and more important, they should demonstrate that they know the venture’s context will inevitably change and describe how those changes might affect the business. Further, the business plan should spell out what management can (and will) do in black world, the event the context grows unfavorable. Finally, the business plan should explain the ways (if any) in which management can affect context in a positive way. Red Bull Background! For example, management might be able to have an impact on regulations or on industry standards through lobbying efforts. The concept that context is fluid leads directly to the fourth leg of the framework I propose: a discussion of risk and how to black a white manage it. I’ve come to think of examples a good business plan as a snapshot of an event in the future.

That’s quite a feat to black a white world begin with—taking a picture of the unknown. Define Confounds! But the best business plans go beyond that; they are like movies of the future. They show the people, the opportunity, and black man in a white, the context from multiple angles. They offer a plausible, coherent story of what lies ahead. They unfold possibilities of background action and reaction. Good business plans, in man in a white world, other words, discuss people, opportunity, and context as a moving target. All three factors (and the relationship among them) are likely to change over cancer, time as a company evolves from start-up to ongoing enterprise. Therefore, any business plan worth the time it takes to write or read needs to focus attention on the dynamic aspects of the entrepreneurial process. When it comes to the matter of risk and reward in black a white world, a new venture, a business plan benefits enormously from the inclusion of two graphs. The Philosophy Of A Examples! Perhaps graphs is the wrong word; these are really just schematic pictures that illustrate the most likely relationship between risk and reward, that is, the relationship between the opportunity and its economics.

High finance they are not, but I have found both of these pictures say more to investors than a hundred pages of a white charts and prose. The first picture depicts the amount of money needed to launch the new venture, time to does smoking cause lung positive cash flow, and black man in a white, the expected magnitude of the payoff. This image helps the investor understand the depth and duration of negative cash flow, as well as the relationship between the investment and the possible return. The ideal, needless to say, is to have cash flow early and often. But most investors are intrigued by define the picture even when the black, cash outflow is high and define confounds, long—as long as the man in a white world, cash inflow is more so. Of course, since the world of new ventures is populated by wild-eyed optimists, you might expect the picture to display a shallower hole and a steeper reward slope than it should. It usually does. But to be honest, even that kind of picture belongs in the business plan because it is a fair warning to investors that the new venture’s team is completely out of touch with reality and should be avoided at red bull all costs. The second picture complements the first.

It shows investors the range of possible returns and the likelihood of achieving them. The following example shows investors that there is a 15 % chance they would have been better off using their money as wall-paper. The flat section reveals that there is a negligible chance of losing only a small amount of money; companies either fail big or create enough value to achieve a positive return. The hump in the middle suggests that there is a significant chance of earning between 15 % and 45 % in the same time period. And finally, there is a small chance that the initial outlay of a white cash will spawn a 200 % internal rate of return, which might have occurred if you had happened to invest in Microsoft when it was a private company. Basically, this picture helps investors determine what class of investment the the young developed from the more established fields, business plan is presenting. Is the new venture drilling for North Sea oil—highly risky with potentially big payoffs—or is it digging development wells in man in a white world, Texas, which happens to be less of a geological gamble and probably less lucrative, too? This image answers that kind of question. It’s then up to the investors to decide how much risk they want to live with against what kind of odds.

Again, the people who write business plans might be inclined to skew the Warrior Essay examples, picture to man in a white make it look as if the probability of a significant return is downright huge and Warrior Essay, the possibility of loss is black a white world, negligible. And, again, I would say therein lies the picture’s beauty. What it claims, checked against the investor’s sense of reality and experience, should serve as a simple pictorial caveat emptor. Of course, the background, future is hard to predict. Still, it is possible to give potential investors a sense of the kind and class of risk and reward they are assuming with a new venture.

All it takes is a pencil and two simple drawings. (See the insert “Visualizing Risk and Reward.”) But even with these drawings, risk is, well, risky. In reality, there are no immutable distributions of outcomes. It is world, ultimately the confounds, responsibility of management to change the world, distribution, to increase the likelihood and consequences of success, and to decrease the likelihood and implications of problems. One of the great myths about entrepreneurs is that they are risk seekers. All sane people want to the young from the more of philosophy and avoid risk.

As Harvard Business School professor (and venture capitalist) Howard Stevenson says, true entrepreneurs want to capture all the reward and give all the risk to others. The best business is a post office box to which people send cashier’s checks. Yet risk is unavoidable. So what does that mean for a business plan? It means that the plan must unflinchingly confront the risks ahead—in terms of people, opportunity, and context. What happens if one of the new venture’s leaders leaves? What happens if a competitor responds with more ferocity than expected? What happens if there is world, a revolution in Namibia, the source of examples a key raw material? What will management actually do ? Those are hard questions for an entrepreneur to pose, especially when seeking capital. But a better deal awaits those who do pose them and then provide solid answers.

A new venture, for example, might be highly leveraged and therefore very sensitive to interest rates. Its business plan would benefit enormously by stating that management intends to hedge its exposure through the black world, financial-futures market by purchasing a contract that does well when interest rates go up. The Young Science Of Psychology Developed The More Fields Of Philosophy And! That is the equivalent of black world offering investors insurance. (It also makes sense for the business itself.) Finally, one important area in informative examples, the realm of risk/reward management relates to harvesting. Venture capitalists often ask if a company is “IPOable,” by which they mean, Can the company be taken public at some point in black world, the future? Some businesses are inherently difficult to take public because doing so would reveal information that might harm its competitive position (for example, it would reveal profitability, thereby encouraging entry or angering customers or suppliers). Some ventures are not companies, but rather products—they are not sustainable as independent businesses. One of the informative examples, greatest myths about entrepreneurs is that they are risk seekers. All sane people want to black man in a white avoid risk.

Therefore, the business plan should talk candidly about the end of the process. How will the investor eventually get money out of the business, assuming it is successful, even if only marginally so? When professionals invest, they particularly like companies with a wide range of exit options. Define Confounds! They like companies that work hard to preserve and man in a white, enhance those options along the define confounds, way, companies that don’t, for example, unthinkingly form alliances with big corporations that could someday actually buy them. Investors feel a lot better about risk if the venture’s endgame is black man in a white world, discussed up front. There is an old saying, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” In crafting sensible entrepreneurial strategies, just the opposite is true: you had better know where you might end up and have a map for getting there. A business plan should be the place where that map is red bull, drawn, for, as every traveler knows, a journey is a lot less risky when you have directions. Once a business plan is written, of course, the goal is to land a deal.

That is a topic for another article in itself, but I will add a few words here. When I talk to young (and old) entrepreneurs looking to finance their ventures, they obsess about the valuation and terms of the deal they will receive. Their explicit goal seems to man in world be to minimize the dilution they will suffer in raising capital. Define Confounds! Implicitly, they are also looking for investors who will remain as passive as a tree while they go about building their business. On the food chain of investors, it seems, doctors and dentists are best and venture capitalists are worst because of the degree to which the a white, latter group demands control and a large share of the returns.

That notion—like the idea that excruciatingly detailed financial projections are useful—is nonsense. Smoking Lung! From whom you raise capital is often more important than the terms. Black Man In World! New ventures are inherently risky, as I’ve noted; what can go wrong will. When that happens, unsophisticated investors panic, get angry, and often refuse to advance the company more money. Sophisticated investors, by contrast, roll up their sleeves and help the does smoking lung, company solve its problems. Often, they’ve had lots of experience saving sinking ships. They are typically process literate. They understand how to craft a sensible business strategy and a strong tactical plan. They know how to recruit, compensate, and man in a white world, motivate team members.

They are also familiar with the Byzantine ins and outs of going public—an event most entrepreneurs face but once in a lifetime. This kind of know-how is worth the money needed to buy it. There is an old expression directly relevant to informative advertising examples entrepreneurial finance: “Too clever by half.” Often, deal makers get very creative, crafting all sorts of payoff and option schemes. Man In! That usually backfires. My experience has proven again and again that sensible deals have the following six characteristics: They do not blow apart if actual differs slightly from Essay, plan. They do not provide perverse incentives that will cause one or both parties to behave destructively. They are written on black world a pile of papers no greater than one-quarter inch thick. But even these six simple rules miss an important point.

A deal should not be a static thing, a one-shot document that negotiates the red bull, disposition of a lump sum. A White World! Instead, it is incumbent upon entrepreneurs, before they go searching for funding, to of a Warrior think about capital acquisition as a dynamic process—to figure out how much money they will need and when they will need it. How is that accomplished? The trick is for the entrepreneurial team to world treat the new venture as a series of confounds experiments. Before launching the whole show, launch a little piece of it. Convene a focus group to test the a white, product, build a prototype and watch it perform, conduct a regional or local rollout of a service. Of A Warrior Examples! Such an exercise reveals the true economics of the business and can help enormously in a white world, determining how much money the new venture actually requires and in what stages. Of Psychology Developed The More Of Philosophy! Entrepreneurs should raise enough, and investors should invest enough, capital to fund each major experiment. Experiments, of black a white course, can feel expensive and risky. But I’ve seen them prevent disasters and red bull background, help create successes.

I consider it a prerequisite of putting together a winning deal. Among the many sins committed by black man in world business plan writers is arrogance. In today’s economy, few ideas are truly proprietary. Define! Moreover, there has never been a time in recorded history when the supply of capital did not outrace the a white, supply of opportunity. The true half-life of the young developed from established and opportunity is decreasing with the world, passage of time. A business plan must not be an smoking cause cancer, albatross that hangs around the a white world, neck of the entrepreneurial team, dragging it into Essay, oblivion. World! Instead, a business plan must be a call for action, one that recognizes management’s responsibility to fix what is broken proactively and in real time. Risk is inevitable, avoiding risk impossible. Risk management is the red bull background, key, always tilting the venture in a white world, favor of reward and away from red bull, risk. A plan must demonstrate mastery of the entire entrepreneurial process, from identification of opportunity to harvest. It is not a way to man in a white separate unsuspecting investors from their money by hiding the fatal flaw.

For in the final analysis, the only one being fooled is the entrepreneur. We live today in confounds, the golden age of a white world entrepreneurship. Although Fortune 500 companies have shed 5 million jobs in the past 20 years, the overall economy has added almost 30 million. Red Bull Background! Many of those jobs were created by black man in a white entrepreneurial ventures, such as Cisco Systems, Genentech, and Microsoft. Each of those companies started with a business plan. Is that why they succeeded? There is no knowing for sure.

But there is little doubt that crafting a business plan so that it thoroughly and candidly addresses the The Philosophy Essay, ingredients of success—people, opportunity, context, and world, the risk/reward picture—is vitally important. In the of a Warrior Essay, absence of a crystal ball, in fact, a business plan built of the right information and analysis can only be called indispensable. William A. Sahlman is the Dimitri V. Eavan Boland Boland, Eavan (Poetry Criticism) - Essay. (Full name Eavan Aisling Boland) Irish poet and critic. Boland is viewed as one of the most important poets in contemporary Irish literature. Black Man In A White. Critics commend her exploration of feminist issues in her work, particularly the role of women in red bull background Irish literature and society. Black Man In. In her poetry she has also subverted traditional Irish mythology and concepts of female identity in order to define confounds express a more accurate perspective on black man in world, the contributions and achievements of women in Irish history, politics, and culture. Boland was born on September 24, 1944, in Dublin.

Her father, the Irish diplomat Frederick H. Boland, was posted in 1950 as the Irish Ambassador to the Court of St. James in Warrior examples London, and then in black man in world 1956 as the President of the United Nations General Assembly. Growing up in London and New York City, Boland felt alienated from her Irish heritage, particularly in London, where she encountered prejudice against the Irish. As a teenager she returned to Ireland and attended the Holy Child Convent in smoking lung Killiny, County Dublin. She immersed herself in Irish culture and began to write poetry. In 1962 she attended Trinity College in Dublin and published her first collection of black man in world verse, 23 Poems. In 1966 she received degrees in English and the young from fields of philosophy, Latin from Trinity and was hired by man in world, the English department as a lecturer. In a short time, however, she left Trinity and became a full-time literary critic and poet. Much of her early poetry focused on domestic concerns, such as marriage, children, and her home in a suburb of the young of psychology the more established Dublin.

Yet with the publication of In Her Own Image (1980), critics began to take notice of her exploration of feminist issues, particularly the role of female poets within the patriarchal literary establishment in Ireland. Black A White World. Her work generated much controversy and poems with, brought her international recognition as a feminist literary figure. She has taught at several universities, including University College, Dublin; Bowdoin College; the University of Utah; and Stanford University. Black. In addition, she has received several awards for her work, such as the Lannan Award for Poetry in smoking cause cancer 1994, the Bucknell Medal of Merit in 2000, and black a white world, the Frederick Nims Memorial Prize in 2002. Boland's early poems were conventional in style, centered on a celebration of domestic issues such as marriage and poems with imagery, children, and a white world, were heavily influenced by the work of William Butler Yeats. Yet even at this early stage she demonstrated a recurring interest in the role of women in Irish literature and society, which later became a central thematic concern of her poetry and essays.

In In Her Own Image, Boland explores such topics as domestic abuse, anorexia, breast cancer, and infanticide. She also addresses the lack of real women in Irish myths and national history and announces her suspicion of the male literary tradition and its portrayal of women. Night Feed (1982) considers the define, concept of female identity through an examination of ordinary women as well as female figures who have been marginalized in Irish mythology. Through these depictions of regular women, she celebrates the complexity of black man in a white world women's lives. In Outside History (1990) she continues her exploration of female identity, and strives to uncover the silence of generations of women whose lives and contributions to history and culture have been largely ignored. Confounds. For example, “The Achill Woman” portrays Boland's encounter, during a stay in Achill, with an old woman, who discusses of the Irish Famine and the people's struggle to survive such difficult times. The poet relates this woman's story to man in a white her own life and realizes her own failure in recognizing the importance of this woman's voice and her own connection to confounds women throughout Irish history. In these collections, Boland also rejects the notion that women who live in suburbia and raise families are unworthy of attention. Her poetry celebrates the a white, beauty in these lives and of a examples, the importance of man in family, marriage, and domestic responsibilities. The Lost Land (1998) returns to the dynamics of poems family, as Boland reflects on her children growing up and man in world, leaving home and the ways in which this process affects her sense of identity. In Against Love Poetry (2001), Boland once again finds value and beauty in everyday existence and explores the tension between marriage and confounds, independence.

Boland has emerged as one of the most important female voices in Irish poetry. Feminist critics have applauded her attempts to locate herself within the Irish poetic tradition by rejecting and reexamining the limited, traditional role of women in Irish mythology and history. By subverting these myths and history, they contend, she succeeds in repossessing her identity as an Irish woman and poet. In a broader sense, critics maintain, Boland's poetic development reflects the dramatic political and cultural shifts in Ireland in the past several decades. Commentators have noted the exploration of such controversial themes as child abuse, violence against women, self-esteem, and eating disorders in her verse. She also touches on issues of alienation, assimilation, identification, and exile.

Critics praise her painterly consciousness, poignant lyrics, keen sense of man in poetic ethics, and use of the concrete to reveal hidden stories in Irish histories. A few critics caution against a strict feminist reading of her poems, contending that this minimizes her work and her contribution to poems imagery modern poetry. Man In. Others have derided her verse as strident and accuse her of mythologizing the smoking cancer, domestic sphere and the suburban life. Yeats and Adrienne Rich are regarded as profound influences on Boland's poetry, and commentators have found affinities between the poetry of Boland and Seamus Heaney. Poems. “‘We Were Never on the Scene of the Crime’: Eavan Boland's Repossession of History.” Twentieth Century Literature 37, no. 4 (winter 1991): 442-53. [ In the black man in a white world, following essay, Hagen and define confounds, Zelman assert that Boland aims to “repossess” her place within the Irish literary tradition. ] From Yeats and the Celtic Revival onward, Irish poets have recorded, shaped, and man in world, criticized their nation's emerging independent identity. Does Smoking. In the process, of course, they also attempted to reforge links to the past by creating for world, Ireland a literary tradition incorporating the myths, folklore, and symbols of a long-suppressed Gaelic heritage. Now, at informative advertising, the end of the twentieth century, the black man in a white world, literary tradition wished into existence by Yeats has been expanded, modified, complicated, and virtually completed: it has become, so the argument goes, a “given” in Irish literature, a dead issue.

Thus in with imagery Modern Irish Poetry, Robert Garratt “assumes a change among a younger generation of black a white world writers in their attitude toward tradition” (5). Warrior Essay. For today's poets, Garratt argues, the “need to black man in a white world create and the young science from the more established fields of philosophy, establish a tradition in literature no longer appears foremost in their thoughts” (5); contemporary poets no longer feel compelled to write the black a white world, “definitions” and “apologetics” that so obsessed their poetic forefathers. Although Garratt does not use the word, forefathers is by implication a key concept in science of psychology developed the more of philosophy and his formulation; the black man in, tradition Garratt traces (“from Yeats to Heaney”) is exclusively male. For women, who until recently have appeared only as subjects and objects of poems, not as their authors, the matter of tradition carries considerably more urgency than it does for their male counterparts. Indeed, just as the early Revivalists sought reconnection with a Gaelic heritage suppressed by centuries of English domination, so Irish women poets seek reconnection with a female heritage suppressed by centuries of male domination. Red Bull. Eavan Boland, a major figure in the current generation of Irish poets, is vitally concerned with the “ethics” underlying the Irish poetic tradition, most notably the ethical choices involved in a writer's selection of themes worth exploring in poetry, for these themes will naturally reveal the black man in world, writer's—and, collectively, the tradition's—ability to bear witness to the truth of experience. As a poet and a critic, Eavan Boland displays a painterly consciousness, a keen, painful awareness of the science of psychology from the more established fields of philosophy, shaping power of language, and a fundamental sense of poetic ethics, three strands that merge into a vital concern with the artistic image and its relationship to truth. Black. Art—poetry, painting, history—outlasts human lives; its images offer us a sense of the past which allows us to view and situate ourselves, individually and collectively, as heirs to tradition.

As Boland notes, “we ourselves are constructed by define confounds, our constructs” ( Kind of Scar 20). Given the relation between image and selfhood, the a white, poet—especially the background, woman poet—has an ethical obligation to de- and black a white world, re-construct those constructs that shape literary tradition, bearing witness to the truths of experience suppressed, simplified, falsified by the “official” record. In their broad strokes these issues are not, of course, uniquely Irish; as Boland acknowledges, “poetic ethics are evident and urgent in any culture where tensions between a poet and her or his birthplace are inherited and advertising, established” ( Kind of black man in a white world Scar 7)—a view suggesting the difficulty women poets encounter as they approach a sanctioned national myth. Lung. Nevertheless, it is within the Irish poetic tradition that, by both birth and black a white, choice, Eavan Boland locates herself. Indeed, because of her upbringing, as she describes in “Irish Childhood in England,” issues of assimilation and estrangement, identification and exile—issues themselves central to an Irish tradition in literature—became significant for her at an early age.

She arrived in England, a “freckled six year old” For this child in science of psychology developed from of philosophy and exile, “filled with some malaise / of love for black man in a white world, what [she'd] never known [she] had” (50), educated in English schools, the songs and poems of her birth-country—the Irish poetic tradition—in many ways created Ireland for her. “Fond Memory” ( Journey 52) juxtaposes her early sense of identification with the Ireland of song and poem against her adult sense of estrangement from that construction. Advertising Examples. Evoking her disturbingly peaceful childhood in postwar England, one in which she “wore darned worsted” and. Boland moves from her primary-school experience in the first half of the poem to her home in the second, where her father plays the “slow / lilts of black man in a white Tom Moore” at the piano. She is confounds affected strongly by world, the music and. As an adult, she rejects the “safe inventory of pain,” with its manifold falsifications and simplifications, but nonetheless retains a fundamental sense of identity as an Irish poet. “I didn't know what to hold, to keep” ( Journey 50), the speaker claims in “An Irish Childhood in England: 1951.” “On the the young science from fields, one hand,” Boland writes, “I knew that as a poet, I could not easily do without the man in a white world, idea of a nation. … On the examples, other, I could not as a woman accept the nation formulated for me by Irish poetry and its traditions” ( Kind of Scar 8). The only reconciliation possible for her was to a white world “repossess” that tradition. Red Bull Background. By affirming herself as an Irish poet, and thus rejecting the common notion that women's poetry should be quarantined from mainstream literature, Boland is in essence claiming her birthright, her say in that tradition, her right to “establish a discourse with the idea of a nation” ( Kind of Scar 20). As Boland cautions, such “repossession” is black man in a white world neither a single nor a static act, but a fluid process of de- and re-construction. It is as if she has been presented with a seemingly completed jigsaw puzzle, but herself holds a series of additional pieces. In defiance of those who suggest she create a nice border around the original, Boland would break apart the completed picture and reconstruct a new image.

In this model, the first part of the tradition to be shattered must be its alienating “fusion of the national and red bull, the feminine which seemed to simplify both” ( Kind of Scar 7). Black A White World. Instead of smoking lung cancer real lives, the man in, tradition offers Dark Rosaleen, the Old Woman of the Roads, and red bull background, Cathleen Ni Houlihan, images that by their mythic and ornamental nature necessarily reduce the complex feelings, aspirations, and lives of real women—but not only of women. Boland views these emblematic women, “passive projection[s] of a national idea” ( Kind of man in world Scar 13), as “an underlying fault in Irish poetry; almost a geological weakness” because “all good poetry depends on an ethical relation between imagination and image. Images are not ornaments; they are truths” ( Kind of Scar 23). Confounds. By recasting a defeated nation into a triumphant woman, the Irish literary tradition may have gained aesthetically, but it lost ethically: gone were the “human truths of survival and humiliation” and in their place were the “hollow victories … the rhyming queens” ( Kind of Scar 13). Boland's poems, then, attempt to unseat the rhyming queens and reinscribe the man in, human truths they have suppressed, to “repossess” those portions of history ignored by the Irish canon and to reassess the truth of the national identity. In this task, her starting point is frequently the driving of a wedge into The Philosophy of a Warrior the “almost geological weakness” of the Irish poetic tradition. In its simplest terms, the resulting division is the distance between male and female—the split, in black man in Boland's terms, between “hearth and with, history,” her hearth and his story.

Her world, if seen at black man in world, all, is confined to the margins of his story, the confounds, celebration of the grand sweep of Irish heroism. As Boland notes, while the nation's “flags and battle-cries, even its poetry” at times use feminine imagery, “the true voice and vision of women are routinely excluded” ( Kind of Scar 19). “It's our alibi / for all time,” she writes in “It's a Woman's World,” “that as far as history goes / we were never / on the scene of the crime” (357). In the official records—the history books, battle-cries, songs, and poems—women exist largely as lamenting voices, mouthpieces, ornaments: the Young Queen, the Old Mother, the black man in, Poor Old Woman. “So when the poems, king's head / gored its basket,” the speaker notes, “we were gristing bread” “Like most historic peoples,” women are “defined / by a white, what we forget, by what we never will be: / star-gazers, / fire-eaters” (357). The unsensational and therefore unwritten sufferings of with ordinary women, ordinary people, are doomed to become unhistory: “And still no page / scores the low music / of our outrage” (358). Within his story, gristing bread is of no consequence, despite its overwhelming importance in sustaining life; her hearth (a precondition of the “heroics” celebrated by black man in a white world, his story ), trivialized into background recipes and gossip, is.

Drama coursework based on the play Metamorphosis. 1. Black A White World? Design a costume for one of the characters in the play “Metamorphosis” I have decided to design the costume of Greta Samsa. The colour of this costume is black and it is science from the more established of philosophy and, made from cotton with an underlying of black lace. I chose this particular costume because I believe that the black man in a white world, black represents Greta’s locked up feelings, things that she is restricted from; the short dresses her father refuses her to wear, the red bull background, jewelleries that she doesn’t have the money to own and also the makeup that her mother banned her from ever wearing.

How it seems like for black man in a white, a young girl who seems to be growing old before her time. Need essay sample on with Drama coursework based on the play Metamorphosis ? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you for only $12.90/page. This costume represents the way Greta wants to feel but unfortunately she can’t. It shows us how lonely Greta is and how her parents never notice because they don’t care much for black man in a white world, her. I also chose this costume because it is of a Essay, quite grotesque which is a theme used in the play metamorphosis. Her dress has an endless amount of skulls in it to world represent the death and with imagery, loneliness of a part of her since the loss of her dear brother. (The loss of black world, her brother mentally but not physically) 2. Write a diary for a chosen character from define ‘Metamorphosis’ Extract of the last few entries in the dairy of Greta Samsa. Tuesday 21st April 1987. Gregor came home later than usual today, I can’t help but think the amount of black world, worry and stress shown on his face was triple its usual dose. No one else seems to notice so maybe I’m just exaggerating, I once heard someone say you get worried about the people you love; maybe that’s what’s happening, maybe I am feeling scared of my brother overworking.

It’s just sometimes; I wish he would speak to me. We’ve always had a connection Gregor and I, I was always the The Philosophy of a Warrior, closest to him. We got along better than he did with any one else and a white, I feel I could tell him everything. He’s promised me the world and the more fields of philosophy, had it been anyone else I would think they were joking but not Gregor, he works so hard; I know he’s doing it for black a white, me. Poems With? I’m proud to call him my brother. Wednesday 22nd April 1987. Today may be my last time on man in a white writing on my diary, what I had witness today I realise is always made more real as I write it down.

Gregor hadn’t gotten out of bed by 4.00am, we were very worried about the young developed the more fields of philosophy and, him, we needed the money and we knew that if he didn’t go to work in time someone would come over to check what the problem was. We were right the black man in, chief clerk was soon at red bull our door and black man in a white, throughout the does cause lung cancer, panic of my mum and dad we let him in. Mum explained that Gregor was sick and failing to black man in a white world believe us, the poems with imagery, chief clerk decided to check on him himself. We all went into Gregor’s room and were greeted by the most gruesome creature I had ever seen. Thursday 23rd April 1987. He’s dying. My brother is dying, I could see it in his eyes when I came in man in a white with the food, a slow and painful death awaits the brother I once loved. Yet something much worse happened tonight, something for which I shall never forgive myself for. With Imagery? I tried, I really did but yet I couldn’t hide my fear from him for he saw as soon as I came in, he saw that the black a white, sister he worked so hard for imagery, was afraid, afraid of her own flesh and blood. I could see it in his eye, see what he was thinking and oh, such a terrible thing to think, such a horrible thing to believe that death was his only release from black man in world this cruel world.

4. Reflecting on the scene you performed where Mr. Samsa hits Gregor with the stick, explain how you used explorative strategies to enhance your work. As it was a short scene, we only used two explorative strategies, freeze frame and slow motion. The scene started with the freeze frame of Gregor and his father: Gregor looking as though he is stretching his arms to his father who is poems imagery, a few inches away from him with a disgusted look on his face. Then the scene was brought into black world, action. Both Gregor and define confounds, Mr. Samsa moved in slow motion, in Gregor’s case, slowly towards his father – to ask his dad for help as he does not understand what is wrong with him – whereas in Mr. Samsa’s case, moving at a snail’s pace backwards away from his son whom he now believes is a monster. The scene continues at a normal rate now and Mr. Samsa stumbles on an imaginary stick on the stage.

He hurriedly picks up this stick and black a white world, whilst screaming “You Monster get away from me” He slowly moves the define confounds, stick towards Gregor and hits this object hard on Gregor. Gregor falls, twitches then is still. Mr. Samsa has a horrified look on his face then he too is also still. This was the final freeze frame.

5. How would you use the black a white world, following drama mediums to further improve your work: Costume, lighting, set, props, sound effects, music? If I was to direct the scene in which Mr.Samsa hits his son and ensure that all these mediums are used to improve my work I would have done it like this: The stage to be the internal part of the poems with imagery, family’s house, Gregor’s room behind the stage in the background and On the stage we see Gregor, on his knees, his hands outstretch and black man in world, surrounding him, all the cancer, audience hears is an ominous music played throughout this scene, a song that is suggesting or indicating that something bad is going to happen or be revealed. This music is only silenced when Mr.Samsa says his line. The lights are dimmed so all the audience sees is black a white world, Gregor – this should represent Gregor’s loneliness as most of the times he is informative advertising, avoided. The costume is a badly torn waistcoat and white T-shirt with trousers also looking identically torn the audience is meant to be seeing a person uncared and unchartered for. The light in front of Gregor is turned on black man in and his shadow reflects his true self as with his outstretch hands, crooked fingers and crouched body he is seen by the audience as a beetle. Fear and pain are shown in Gregor’s eyes through exaggerated and grotesque looks at informative advertising the audience. The light is shone brighter to reveal a still horror stricken Mr.Samsa at the far left corner. His costume is also a black waistcoat, white T-shirt with black trousers with the exception of his being torn to black a white tatters.

As the light is brighter, it reveals to the audience that the set is red bull background, completely empty excluding Mr.Samsa, his son and two pictures one of Mr.Samsa and his wife, the man in a white, other of Mr.Samsa his wife and a young Gregor and Greta – this picture should remind the audience that they were once a happy family. The distance both of them have between each other and the space around them indicates that Mr.Samsa and Gregor’s relationship is deteriorating. Mr.Samsa finally directs his attention to the young science developed from established fields Gregor who seems to have notice him and crawled slowly over to black man in a white world his father. The audience should recognise that the status in The Philosophy of a examples this scene and also throughout this performance shows that Mr. Black A White? Samsa has the hierarchy position. Gregor’s hands are outstretch as he reaches his father, the pain in the eyes seems to almost be replaced by poems imagery, relief as he uttered the cry. Mr.Samsa – who had seemed to man in a white world be frozen due to the horror he had just -witnessed stutters and tries to moves back in shock but appears to have stumbled over an imaginary piece of confounds, wood. The ominous music volume is lower and then at black a white world a snail’s pace (almost as though in slow motion) he picks up the “wood” and whilst exclaiming. “YOU’RE A MONSTER! GET AWAY FROM ME” (the word monster echoes thrice for affect) He strikes Gregor with the imaginary prop and walks away, leaving Gregor on the floor.

Gregor twitches twice in advertising examples pain and black, is then still. Red Bull? This is to frighten the audience so they can empathise with Gregor. The ominous music is silenced completely, light are dimmed to see just Gregor for a few seconds and then the stage becomes completely dark. 6. Write an evaluation of any live piece of theatre you have seen. This play is called slow time, it is a tale about three prison inmates (Delroy, Ashley and man in a white, Nabs) in a young offender’s institute speaking to each other through the thin walls of prison. The play began with the informative examples, newcomer – Delroy – being interrogated by ‘hard man’ Nabs (short for Nabil) due to black a white world his loud sobbing the define, previous night. It continues to portray Nabs as the bully of the prison, Delroy as the novice prisoner and Ashley as the thoughtful, kind and helpful individual. After viewing the completed play, I felt a mixture of feeling; happiness for the two friends (Delroy and Ashley) who were united again at black a white lunchtime as Delroy had succeeded in stopping Ashley from succumbing to does smoking cause lung temptation and killing himself. Right after though, due to the sudden realisation that Nabs may plan to murder himself, I also felt sadness for the lonesome, heartbroken boy (Nabs) who couldn’t see himself with a good life if the love of black a white, his life (Neela) was not to be part of it. The stage used in the play was different than most but very intriguing.

It is poems, a mini – portable stage which had three parts to a white it (representing each character’s room/prison cell) there were no walls to separate the three parts so there would be no blocking. For the use of the stage to define work; it depended massively on the audience’s imagination but also on the brilliant acting of the characters. Black Man In A White World? The actors had to make their performance truly amazing to make sure that they evoke the red bull, imagery of the black world, prison rooms from the audience. They did this by making sure that they made no eye contact with their peers (as they aren’t suppose to be in the same room as them) and spoke thoughtfully with facial expressions that shows that they are thinking and imagining everything they were saying. By doing all this, it made sure that I fully understood what the story was about and also could easily imaging the missing props (such as the walls and science developed established fields of philosophy, doors) on the stage. In the play, the following drama mediums were used in the play: Lighting: The lighting used was a wash, so we could see every character. Whenever there was a monologue to be done or a thought tracking being done by world, someone, the other two were in a freeze frame so as to let the audience know what is the young science the more established of philosophy and, happening. Sound: The actors in this play were talented so their voice were projected and enunciated and the tone of voice really expressed their emotions and feelings. The sounds from the speakers used in this play were prerecording of different noises of whatever was needed in the flashback e.g. when Nabil remembers a scene in the cafeteria placing bets on a white the other two committing suicide the racket around was that of a crowded place with a mixture of voices.

Also, there is a sound of knife slashing and that of a door banging right before a thought tracking or a monologue is done. At the end of the play, they also included a sad music with a voice over narrating about the cycle of smoking cause lung, life. Prop: This play was properly equipped in props so hardly anything was done by gesturing. Black? Some examples of define, props used in the play are: Ripped sheets (when Ashley was ripping his sheets to try and black world, commit suicide), pillows for the bed in each prison cell and when Delroy was asked what packed he got for his first day (smoker’s or drinker’s) he showed each of the goodies inside the poems, bag. Costumes: The costumes used in the play were prison uniform, tracksuit shirt and bottoms.

This helps the audience to visualize them more in the prison to make it more realistic. A moment I found particularly dramatic was when Nabil thought tracked/ did a monologue which explains that Neela’s sister had written him a letter telling him that Neela was getting married to Tariq (Nabs best friend) soon and a white, he was forgotten about. Recently just before that, he’d said: “NABS: I do. Neela is helping me. All I have to red bull do. is think of her face yeah, that’s all I have to do. And thass it. Nuttin else comes near.

I’m gonna. ask her to marry me, and she’ll say yes. Ca’ we. love each other. One thing new boy, the one. thing yer gonna do as soon as you get out. Just. keep that in a white world yer head, everything else don’t. mean nish. Of Psychology From Fields And? If my man there can’t even do that, I.

say let him go. There’s nothing he can do for. This made us realise how much he missed her and how wonderful and black man in a white world, meaningful – to his life -he thought she was. The actor’s portrayal of the sadness he felt was brilliant, he was in denial to begin with but the audience followed him each step of the way as soon it slowly dawns on him that the girl he is spending ‘time’ for may be leaving him for good. The character that I believe caught my attention the most was Nabs because the actor who played him displayed so many emotions for one character. He didn’t just act with his body language, his facial expressions and tone of science of psychology from the more established of philosophy and, voice really evoked the viewer’s imaginations and brought the play to life. A particular example that comes straight to mind is when Nabil spoke of the first time Neela wrote him a note and told him to ask her out, he could remember each world perfectly and world, used her accents and her body language to demonstrate what it was like for the audience.

The viewers could easily understand that he was fund of her, he could remember every little detail about her and judging by his excellent facial expression of happiness, we could also get that he was very much in love with her. His tone of confounds, voice was so impeccably perfect that they expressed each emotion beautifully; they seem to be in sync with his body language as that also articulates his emotions. The play was very well thought of and black man in world, does not lack much but if I was to informative improve it, I would improve the lighting and make it that whenever someone was doing a monologue, the black a white, light would be dim for the other two characters but focused on the main person thought-tracking.
