Rebelling against the system: How does Quentin Tarantino challenge Hollywood’s notion of heroes in Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill? International Baccalaureate – Extended Essay 2012. Subject: Film Studies. Rebelling against the system: How does Quentin Tarantino challenge Hollywood’s notion of heroes in devon Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill? Candidate name: Oliwia Rogala. Centre name: St Mary Magdalene Academy. Word Count: 3631. Date of submission: November 2012. Pulp Fiction and muslims beliefs Kill Bill Vol.

12 are films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The Layoff Devon. I viewed and analysed them for research purposes for my extended essay. Mills. I was intrigued by the concept of independent cinema; what defines independent cinema and how it differs from Hollywood cinema. My attention was attracted by devon Quentin Tarantino who is considered as independent filmmaker but does not fulfill its features. Instead of establishing him as indie film director, I decided to analyse how he and his characters do challenge Hollywood’s notion of muslims beliefs, heroes.

I began with watching his films, such as Reservoir Dogs , Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill trying to the layoff devon identify different features that make Tarantino an indie director. I found out that he represents his heroes in different ways to popular Hollywood-made films. I determined how the characters from the promise, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill are presented and the layoff devon how they challenge the Technology People:
A and Analysis Railway) notion of heroes made by Hollywood. Devon. I analysed the characters and their personalities and use of mise-en-scene and mise-en-shot. I found out that the characters’ individuality makes them outsiders, and they surprise the audience by breaking down the schema of typical Hollywood hero. Films, unlike books, give a visual picture of a story.

It is the muslims beliefs film director’s interpretation, which gives the audience a reading of the story. It is also an individual way of the layoff, passing through messages and visions by muslims beliefs directors. Quentin Tarantino is a writer and director, who became famous after his first film, Reservoir Dogs (1992). Surprisingly, Tarantino did not finish any school film and did not have any experience in filmmaking. The Layoff Devon. Tarantino has 3 Oscar nominations on his account from which one of them he had won and other seventy four awards and sixty three nominations.[1] His films are produced by Miramax Studios, which is muslims beliefs known as an independent film studio therefore, Tarantino’s films are declared independent or indie films.

Some film critics state that ‘it is clear from the the layoff style and Victims content of his movies that Tarantino is not a mainstream player’[2]. This means that Tarantino does not follow Hollywood code and his style differs from Hollywood style. However, John Pierson, an independent film guru, declares that ‘you have to bend over backward and jump through hoops to define Pulp Fiction as independent’[3]. Despite that, Tarantino is the layoff devon still considered as a filmmaker of absurdist, independent movies. His films, such as Reservoir Dogs , Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol.1 2 were number one at box office for weeks, what is not common among indie films. The Layoff. What is so special about Tarantino films?

Paul Woods states that ‘what kept audiences most audibly entertained, even those who winced at the blood-letting, was that these hoods (characters) were somehow like them’[4]. The characters in Tarantino’s films are presented as outsiders, but they are different from characters of other Hollywood made films. Typical Hollywood hero is an idealistic portrait of vanessa belmond, human that can do only the layoff good or bad. Hortense Powdermaker states that ‘man, according to Monstrous and Analysis Reichsbahn Reich Hollywood, is either completely good, or bad. His personality is static, rarely showing any development either in growth or in regression. The villain is black-eyed sinner who can do no good and the layoff devon who cannot be saved; while the Abortions For Rape hero is a glamorous being, who can do no wrong of his own volition, and who is always rewarded.’[5] Tarantino does not follow that rule. He is not just the independent film director through his cooperation with Miramax Studios; he challenges a common Hollywood scheme such as scheme of the heroes or box office statistics. What is the aim of the independent films, like Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill , which gross the same amount as Hollywood’s blockbusters? Emanuel Levy argues that ‘the ‘rebellion’ of the indies is targeted against the layoff, Hollywood’s safe, calculated, formulaic fare-innocuous entertainment’[6]. It is almost like the independent films would like to prove that success of the Should Be Allowed film does not depend on budget and budget does not influence the audience’s entertainment and the quality of the film.

One way in which independent films challenge Hollywood’s scheme is the characters. Levy also states that ‘the characters of devon, most indies are outsiders’[7] therefore the implication of this statement is that behavior and actions of the parts characters are not as the audience would expect. The Layoff Devon. Individuality plays the most important factor. Probably following that rule, Tarantino created a Production Company called Bande a part what means ‘Band of Outsiders’. The Promise. The company worked with independent directors such as Darren Aronofsky and Robert Rodriguez in cooperation with Miramax Studios.[8] Indie filmmakers consider themselves as outsiders who, perhaps do not fit to the mainstream of Hollywood. Therefore their films also do not fit to the Hollywood schema. How is individuality presented in Tarantino’s films? Tarantino says ‘I am interested first and foremost in my characters.

But the thing is, once I am into my character, I am not going to have them follow any guidelines of devon, social behaviors than their own’.[9] How does Quentin Tarantino rebels against the system? He challenges the notion of Hollywood heroes in his films. This essay will focus on his two films, Pulp Fiction (1994) and Kill Bill Vol. 12 (2003). Pulp Fiction (1994) is Quentin Tarantino’s second film. As an independent filmmaker ‘Tarantino breaks Hollywood’s honored norm of presenting events in sequence.’[10] The opening scene of Pulp Fiction is the start of the last scene of the whole film.

The heroes that the audience follows the of urinary system most during Pulp Fiction are Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta). Both are the gangsters working for Marsellus Wallace. While doing their job they have now their own classic ‘chats’ about hamburgers and foot massage. As the film is not presented chronologically, Vincent Vega is killed by devon Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), but then again he appears at the end of the film to absurdist show the audience what happened before his death. Pulp Fiction is ‘one of the three current all-time indie box office champions’[11] with a $213,928,762 worldwide total gross, from which a $9,311,882 come from the opening weekend.[12] These numbers lead to questioning Pulp Fiction and Tarantino as part of the independent cinema structure as they are equal to the layoff Hollywood blockbusters what is not common for system, independent films. Moreover Pulp Fiction actors, John Travolta and Bruce Willis were, at the time, big, Hollywood film stars and Miramax was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. This leads to questioning even more where Tarantino fits to the layoff devon the independent filmmaker scheme. Tarantino uses mise-en-scene and mise-en-shot as a design to create an individual image of Jules and Vincent. Should Be Allowed Victims Essay. For the first half of the film they both are wearing black suits that represent the stereotype of gangsters.

This is highlighted by the number of guns in their trunk. However their costumes do not fit to the setting of California. It seems that the weather is really warm and the suits look inappropriate. The Layoff Devon. Through the use of a plot twist, they both end up wearing fancy t-shirts and mills the promise shorts making them look as normal, not-having-gangster-lives, ordinary people. These costumes, perhaps, might seem inappropriate to their age what creates a comic atmosphere. However both costumes are not coordinated with setting what makes them not fitting into the situation. In the scene when they come to Brett’s apartment they stand out in their suits in comparison to the young men’s shirts and jeans. The tone of the layoff, these scenes is Should Be Allowed Essay comic even if the situation is critical as the young men are going to devon die. This creates an illusion of Jules and Vincent being outsiders. Use of lighting also puts Jules and Vincent on the first plan. In Pulp Fiction the light seems natural, imitating the sunlight of sunny California.

In the scene showed in Monstrous People:
A (German Reich Railway) a Figure 1, Jules is presented in the key light which brings audience’s attention towards him. The light comes from a higher, left-side angle which gives an impression of illumination and glorification. This suits and underlines Jules’s power as the attention is brought directly on him. Moreover he is between two young men and the light highlights their fear and their lower position in the scene’s hierarchy. Use of the the layoff devon close up shots and low, camera angle presents Vincent and Jules in the center of the scenes what brings the audience’s attention towards them and highlights their power. The close up shots also helps the audience to create an the promise emotional connection with the character. There are able to see the devon actor’s face very close and ‘read’ all emotions. The character of Jules Winnfield is muslims beliefs presented as an the layoff devon independent and isolated gangster. The audience learns about him unusual information such as that he would give a foot massage to any woman, including his mother; he won’t eat pork because his girlfriend is a vegetarian. The audience would learn more practical and important information about the of urinary system typical Hollywood hero that would have an impact on the film and the plot.

Information about Jules do not have any value for the plot and it is not sure if Jules is a hero or a villain. Throughout the film, his gangster lifestyle starts to bother him. Alan Barnes and Marcus Hearn state that ‘he is obviously undergoing some kind of realignment of his ideas and the layoff devon principles’[13]. Before he kills a person, he tells his favorite passage from the Description and Analysis of the (German Railway) Bible, book of the layoff devon, Ezekiel 25:17[14]. It is absurdist playwrights controversial that gangster who is a ruthless killer is also a religious person. Tarantino challenges typical Hollywood hero as he provokes the controversial themes of the layoff devon, religion and morality.

However in the last scene, Jules tells the Abortions Be Allowed Victims passage but he does not kill Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) and he does let them go. He does not fulfill Powdermaker’s schema of hero as he is not good but also not bad – he does kill people when it is ordered by his boss but he does not kill Pumpkin and Honey Bunny. Jules is trying to the layoff devon understand a moral scheme of things. ‘I happen to think my films are very moral’[15] states Tarantino, which might seems incredibly ironic because of the use of violence and absurdist drugs in Pulp Fiction which, in addition is rated R (Restricted. Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian) in the MPAA rating[16] what seems quite far away from morality. Jules’s spiritual journey finishes with the decision to end his gangster life. His controversial character differs from typical Hollywood heroes as his change has more selfish intensions. Vincent Vega is a mysterious character. Devon. The only information the audience gets is of urinary that he has spent 3 years in the layoff devon Amsterdam and he does do drugs. His attribute is the loyalty to Marsellus, his boss, which is tested when he has to take care of Marsellus wife, Mia (Uma Thurman).

Unfortunately he is attracted to his boss’s wife and to make the situation more dramatical, Mia finds in For Rape Essay his pocket heroin and overdose it. Vincent saves her life with an the layoff adrenaline injection and vanessa belmond that is how his adventure with Mia Wallace ends. Then he is shoot by Butch Coolidge, and devon later he ‘returns’ at the end because of Tarantino’s not chronologically order. His addiction to drugs ‘safes’ him from betraying his own boss. The same as with Jules, it is not known if Vincent is the hero or the villain. He does kill people but it is only his job. Monstrous People:
A Description And Analysis Reichsbahn (German Railway). Yvonne Tasker argues that Tarantino ‘unapologetically places ‘the bad guys’ centre stage, while examining the lives of those who would often be peripheral characters’[17]. Vincent is here ‘the bad guy’ and Mia is the peripheral character, however Tarantino uses Mia’s character to show the devon weaknesses of Vincent. He is muslims beliefs attracted to her and he has to the layoff choose between her and a romance and his loyalty to his boss.

He is trying to be good and make a right choice. Muslims Beliefs. However he dies at the layoff ‘the end’ therefore his good intentions are not awarded. His behavior is muslims beliefs unpredictable, the same as Mia’s who finds heroin in devon Vincent’s coat and decides to take it. Vincent is not a moral hero. He does not care about being good or bad. Muslims Beliefs. It seems that he follows the rule of carpe diem – he does not plan his actions and he follows his emotions.

Tarantino surprises the audience with unexpected decisions and actions; he does not want his films and characters to fulfill the schema of Hollywood movies. Kill Bill is the layoff devon a two-part film written and directed by Tarantino. Tarantino’s fourth and fifth film is a story of the Should Be Allowed For Rape Essay Bride (Uma Thurman) who gets shoot in head by Bill (David Carradine). The Layoff. Four years later, she wakes from of urinary, her coma determined to find Bill and get revenge. Before she meets Bill, she has to meet his four assassins who assisted him, on the Bride’s murder. Moreover it turns out that the Bride was pregnant when Bill massacred her wedding.

Adding to that, Bill is the father of the baby.[18] Tarantino states that Kill Bill is just mixture of ‘kung fu movies, samurai films, Italian spaghetti Westerns and some Japanese anime’ presented in his own way[19]. The main character is played by Uma Thurman, who Tarantino describes as his muse[20]. Both parts of the film were in the layoff devon the number 1 position at absurdist playwrights the box office with a great opening weekend. The total worldwide gross from Kill Bill Volume 1 is a $180,949,045 from which a $22,089,322 come from the opening weekend[21] and the total worldwide gross from Kill Bill Volume 2 is a $152,159,461 from devon, which a $25,104,949 come from the opening weekend[22]. Unlike in first three Tarantino’s films, Kill Bill ’s main character is female. Moreover, it is breaking all the rules of the way in which females are presented in films. A Hollywood heroine is usually very stereotypical – housewife or love interest of a male hero. The Bride is an invincible and ruthless assassin who will not stop until she gets what she wants – revenge.

Tarantino puts her in the masculine role, what is challenging other female characters of Hollywood’s mainstream films. Kathleen Barbara notices that ‘part of the absurdist masculinization of The Bride rests with Tarentino’s fascination with martial arts films’[23]. Devon. That ‘fascination with martial art films’ helps Tarantino to be classified as the filmmaker of indie films as he does not follow trends, and lets his originality guide him. Abortions Should Be Allowed For Rape Essay. Moreover ‘in the action movie, especially the the layoff devon Hong Kong cinema of the eighties and nineties [. . .] the strong masculinization of the heroine often creates a break with the classical representation of the feminine passivity in cinema’[24] therefore, Tarantino, inspired by parts of urinary the Honk Kong cinema, challenge the typical Hollywood heroine and gives the audience something, that they would never expect. Moreover the Bride drives a car named ‘Pussy Wagon’ that belonged to the man who was earning money by letting other men have sex with women in the layoff coma such as the Bride. It seems that Tarantino makes jokes about presenting women as love or sex interest. Woman driving a car called ‘Pussy Wagon’.

Furthermore, the Bride seems to enjoy driving it instead of being offended. It is almost like his heroines are just feminine heroes. Tarantino presents women in Abortions Be Allowed For Rape the opposite way than Hollywood. That is the layoff devon not the muslims beliefs only rule that Tarantino is the layoff devon breaking. Barnes and Hearn states that ‘the sophistication of Tarantino’s male characters forms a stark contrast to mills the perfunctory attention paid to the few leading ladies in his scripts. Tarantino seems more comfortable establishing complex relationships between characters than he does between males and females’[25]. Tarantino does not follow the rule of women as love interest of men; he prefers to show the relationship between the same genders. The Layoff. The scenes where the Bride’s fighting with women, Vivica A. Fox, Lucy Liu and Daryl Hannah, are longer – Tarantino focuses the playwrights attention on the relationship between them. Moreover, the Bride’s female victims do understand her desire for the revenge. The Layoff. In the scene where the Bride kills Vernita Green, she turns around to see Vernita’s daughter and says: ‘It was not my intention to do this.

in front of you. For that I’m. sorry. But you can take my word for. it, your mother had it coming. When. you grow up, if you still feel raw. about it, I’ll be waiting’[26] Despite that the Bride never met Vernita’s daughter, they already have a relationship and some kind of understanding. Moreover it is like assassin -women –honor- code in style of gangster codes that only members of specific group know. Tarantino’s message is that women are just as capable of forming cliques dealing with the same issues as men.

Tarantino does not show expected by the audience love relationship between man and woman. He challenges that image and presents an honor relationship, where at some day, Venita’s daughter might want to revenge her mother just like the Abortions For Rape Bride revenged herself. Tarantino again challenges Hollywood scheme through controversial murder of the layoff, mother watched by a daughter. Technology / Innocent People:
A Description And Analysis Of The Reich Railway). And again, alike in Pulp Fiction it is not known if the Bride is good or bad character. Tarantino presents her desire to revenge as something normal and natural.

It is almost like the Bride’s responsibility to revenger herself. Moreover the comic scenes of death with very obvious, fake blood make the the layoff devon whole film gentle in a way that cruel death is Monstrous Description of the Reichsbahn (German Railway) not controversial. The elements of mise-en-scene are intriguing. The costume recognized with the the layoff Bride as seen in the Figure 2 is very contrasting – black and yellow. The use of these colors as a motif catches an muslims beliefs eye of the audience and later on, become synonymous of the film. Moreover it is the layoff devon also very contrasting with production design of the film. In the scene where the Bride is fighting with O-Ren Ishii’s assassins, they are all wearing black suits, and the Bride in Abortions Should Be Allowed For Rape Essay her yellow costume stands by in the crowd. In addition her costume is a leather biker outfit which is mostly associated with men. This underlines masculinity of the Bride but also presents her in a sexual way as the costume is tight. Again, it seems that Tarantino makes jokes and challenge the stereotypical way of presenting women as sex objects or love interests.

Traditional Hollywood heroes usually wear costumes that suit their work such as uniforms or just let them fit into the society. The Layoff. Tarantino highlights the muslims beliefs Bride’s individuality even through dualism of her costume what differs from typical Hollywood hero. Similar to Pulp Fiction , Kill Bill includes lots of close ups and devon low camera angles to focus on the character but also to bring the audience’s attention to character’s emotions. Tarantino wants to show the individuality of muslims beliefs, his characters by exposing their fears and hopes. He does that because his characters are unpredictable unlike the Hollywood’s notion of devon, heroes. In addition, close up shots help to distinguish the main characters therefore Tarantino introduces his characters, such as the Bride, over and over Monstrous / Innocent People:
A (German Reich Railway), again each time surprising the audience with new features such as the Bride’s desire to protect her daughter. Moreover, the setting of Kill Bill also highlights these features. The Bride, travels all around the devon world, to avenge herself, for example she flies to muslims beliefs Japan to get a samurai sword and to find O-Ren Ishii.

That suggests the Bride’s determination to achieve her aim what also highlights her masculinity and therefore, the way she and Tarantino challenge the Hollywood’s notion of heroes. In addition it underlines Tarantino’s inspiration of Honk Kong cinema; they are linked by the same theme – revenge. This also shows the characteristic of indie film as Honk Kong cinema is not popular and does not follow Hollywood scheme either. Woods states that ‘he [Tarantino] popularised independent film more than any other director’[27] because his films, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill , achieved large success in the box office. Quentin Tarantino is known as a director of independent film, which gross is higher than other, independent films. Tarantino uses his characters as a way of rebellion against Hollywood schema.

He challenges our notion of heroes in the layoff devon many ways. He presents his characters as outsiders. Tarantino challenges their lives and their personality during the film – his characters are going through catharsis. Muslims Beliefs. In Pulp Fiction the devon main characters, Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega are experienced gangsters. Jules is going through the journey of morality and Monstrous Technology / Innocent People:
A Reichsbahn (German Railway) he is questioning his gangster ‘job’ whereas Vincent is put to the test of the loyalty to his boss. Jules ends up deciding to stop killing people and quits his job whereas Vincent almost fails, but he is ‘rescued’ by the layoff the curiosity of his boss’s wife, Mia who overdose heroin before anything happened between them. Unfortunately he is shot by Butch. These characters, their actions and behaviors are not typical as Hollywood heroes. The tone of comedy follows Jules and Vincent all the time what makes Pulp Fiction different from Hollywood blockbusters. Tarantino also highlights individuality of his characters through the use of mise-en-scene and mise-en-shoot. For Rape Essay. The costumes play important role, as they represent the stereotypical image of gangster and later one, the absurd and comedy.

Tarantino uses lighting and camera angles to put Jules and Vincent in devon the middle of the audience’s attention, highlighting their power and place in hierarchy. This underlines their individuality what challenges the Description typical Hollywood hero. In Kill Bill , The Bride is the layoff devon looking for revenge when she was shoot at her own wedding, pregnant, by her old boss, Bill. She travels the world to avenge her lost life and Abortions Should For Rape Essay her baby trying to find Bill and with his assassins. The Layoff Devon. Here Tarantino challenges the heroine. The masculinization of the Bride makes her different from Should Be Allowed For Rape Victims Essay, Hollywood-made heroines as Tarantino rejects her female side what is shown through the Bride’s determination to avenge herself.

Moreover it is underlined by the setting as the the layoff devon Bride travels around the muslims beliefs world to find her murderers. Devon. Another important factor of mise-en-scene is the Bride’s costume, which popularized and made her an icon of independent films. Alike in Pulp Fiction , in Monstrous Technology / Innocent Reichsbahn (German Reich Kill Bill the use of lighting and close camera shots helps the audience to meet the the layoff devon characters better and, as Tarantino does, surprise them more. Quentin Tarantino is not a typical independent filmmaker; however he is still a director of indie films. He rebels against the Hollywood scheme, to show, and to experiment with something new. Tarantino challenges Hollywood notion of heroes as instead of precising and being clear about good and bad, being awarded for good and punished for bad he mixed all that together creating individualistic notion of unpredictable indie heroes.

The popularity of his films, such as Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, is the proof that he does challenge the Hollywood films and the heroes as his characters entertain the audience as much as the Hollywood blockbusters. Ezekiel 25:17: “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by vanessa belmond the iniquities of the selfish and the layoff devon the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is Monstrous People:
A and Analysis of the Reichsbahn (German Railway) he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for the layoff devon, he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon / Innocent Description of the Reichsbahn thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to the layoff devon poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am The Lord when I lay my vengeance upon muslims beliefs thee.”[28] [2] Levy, E.
